Geocache Description:

Most people think of Shropshire as a peaceful and quiet County but in WW2 this was far from the truth. Church Stretton and Craven Arms were major munitions storage dumps and the Long Mynd had great strategic importance and some strange secret sites. This is the last in a series of 4 caches on and around the Long Mynd put out to commemorate the 60th anniversary of VE day. All have a WW2 connection but what is it? You will have to visit the cache to find out.

I have given all the car park locations as grid references and I suggest that you buy a map of the area (OS explorer 1:25,000 sheet 217 is the best) and plot them and the cache locations and chose a route before you start.  The series can easily be done in a day and a nice place to start is from the  Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre in Craven Arms

Please be careful on the series, the roads up to the top of the Long Mynd and down the other side are steep, single track and unguarded.  DRIVE CAREFULLY.   The caches all involve some rough and sometimes steep walking.

The 4 caches are:

This cache is the longest walk; it’s not too steep but about a 5 Km round trip.   Watch out for the gliders they seem to come in to land really low.

Park on the verge by the entrance to the gliding club at grid SO 404 919

To get to the site you need to follow the “starboard way” permissive footpath around to the right of the gliding club.  The views along this path are wonderful.     Follow this path around the airfield until you come to 2 signposts - take the path to “Plowden” and on through a new wooden gate which marks the edge of the airfield.  Here there is a National Trust sign for “Longmynd—Handless”.  In about 100 yards there is a gate on your left and a track leading up the hill.  Look for the small pond dug in the war to put out fires on the hill.  The cache is further along the track and through another gate.

If you drive down the hill by the gliding club please BE CAREFUL, this road seems even steeper than the way up and there are less passing places!
