The word “knik” comes from the Tanaina word meaning “fire.” The name has been applied to the glacier, and the river and arm that flows from it. It has also been applied to this region. Nearby is the old village of Knik. Knik developed during the 1898-1916 gold rush. Not much left today but Knik was once the landing/supply point for mines in the Talkeetna Mountains/Hatcher Pass area. The town was founded around the turn of the century at an existing Tanaina village. By 1915 it had about 500 white families. That year the US Government began the Alaska Railroad, which bypassed Knik and the town died. Most of the town and it’s buildings were moved to Wasilla, where the supply trial crossed the new railroad. Some of the towns main characters were Orville J. Herrning, owner of the Knik Trading Co, Frank Cannon owner of the Pioneer Hotel and George Palmer for whom the town of Palmer is named. The town was deserted by 1919 except Palmers store.
As you enjoy this cache, take a moment to enjoy the view. The water you see below is the Knik Arm, the northern extension of Cook Inlet. The current is the tides, which are some the most extreme in the world.
