Geocache Description:

History Happened Here: "Dig It." Another cache celebrating locations significant in Shasta County History.

The cache is above and west of the 10+ foot deep "Dig."

Water is the stuff of life and also essential in early gold mining history. This land is traversed by many "water ditches" that can be traveled by bike and foot. The Le Mountain Tour caches cover many of these trails. This is not one of them. This dig is best viewed from above.

The significance of this site is it's size and effort that must have been required to create it. The Chinese of early gold mining and Shasta County history dug most of these ditches. If you look across the road to the south, you might see the red banks that were the reason Piety Hill was moved to become Igo. Hydraulic mining, outlawed in the early 1900's was a popular mining technique in the late 1800's and it has been postulated that this may have been a ditch carrying runoff from this gold harvesting process. There are many other ditches in the area that carried water from Rainbow Lake to settlers and miners camps. "Odd Fellow" is near one of these.

This ammo can contains many items for young and old (er) including:

FTF Bandana with MrSmiles face on it.
Geo-tatoos and a wooden train whistle.
