Geocache Description:

A traditional cache near the former home of the Inkerman Rockets

The Inkerman Rockets were founded in 1942 by school teacher Lloyd LaPort, who worked at the elementary school in the village.

Laporte, originally from Collingwood, Ontario enjoyed hockey and built a rink in the schoolyard for the children to use. He eventually purchased some hockey sweaters and entered a team in the Winchester Town League. From these humble beginnings the Rockets eventually became one of the top junior teams between Ottawa and Cornwall. The Rockets had twins Erwin & Edwin Duncan and Leo Boivin leading them against teams from much bigger centers. Leo Boivin played professional hockey for the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Boston Bruins.

One of the teams greatest accomplishments was during the 1951-52 season when they almost made it to the semi-finals of the Memorial Cup, but lost to the Quebec City Citadels, who were led by the legendary Jean Belliveau.

The Rockets provided local hockey fans with exciting action for nearly 20 years. The legend of the Rockets lives on in Inkerman.
