Located off the bank of the Shenango river, you will find an ammo
box with lots of room for trading. But, there are other interesting
reasons you should visit this cache. For one, nearby you'll see one
of the largest Sycamore trees in these parts. This grandaddy
Sycamore towers 100 feet above the Shenango river bed supported by
a massive trunk with a 141 inch bole!
But there's more.... As the name implies, you will see another
unusual sight. A colony of Great Blue Herons (visit link) inhabits the tree. Nearly 30 nests
are visible from the river in this single huge Sycamore. In the
spring and early summer, each nest has a young heron with attending
parents. If you reach the cache by canoe during the season you will
glimpse these magnificent birds fishing the local waters. Too -
geese, ducks, black snakes, turtles and deer frequent the river and
its banks so keep your eyes peeled.
If you miss the season don't despair because hidden in the tree
you'll find a bear! If you don't want the surprise to be spoiled,
don't look at the picture attached to this cache until you log the
find....!
This cache was set on the NE bank of the Shenango river on our
fourth canoe trip from Sharon to West Middlesex. A canoe makes for
easy access. There are likely other ways to get the cache but those
avenues remain unexplored by Team Rattlebars.
NOTE: this is a swampy area with many mosquitoes. Dress properly
and bring lots of bug juice & fresh water. During the monsoon
season, there may be swift currents and/or lots of water to deal
with. This is a river bank after all.
