Geocache Description:

The cache is accessible by a short drive on gravel roads in the foothills.

Special Note! The cache is not on Private Property. It is on a road allowance and you can park 6 meters (20 feet) from the cache. You do not have to cross any fences or go through any gates. If your GPSr indicates otherwise, go back and re-check your caculations and let your GPSr settle down to the 3 to 4 meter accuracy you should get in this area.

The cache is a normal camoflaged Rubbermaid Container. The cache is not located at the above coordinates, but information gathered there and some simple mathematics will give you the coordinates of the actual cache.

The above coordinates lead you to the site of the first church in southern Alberta. This site is now a Province of Alberta Historic Site. Two plaques there will detail the story of how the church was built, and the background of the two missionaries who came here to minister to the dwellers of the plains. One of them had his name affixed to Treaty No. 7 signed by the Blackfoot Confederacy in 1877.

NOTE! Change August 9, 2019 To find the cache you will need to do the following:

Option 1 from the plaque on the large cairn: (not available while cairn is being repaired from vandalism)

1. Take the year of birth of the first missionary to arrive, from this subtract 1247 and add the result to the last three digits of the North coordinates given above.

2. Subtract the age of the second missionary at the time of his arrival from the age of the first missionary at the time of his arrival. Multiply this number by 4, to this add 2 and add the result to the last three digits of the West coordinates given above.

Option 2 using the plaque on the small cairn:

1. Take the year lay helper Alexis Cardinal built the crude log cabin surmounted by a cross and from this subtract 1278 and then add the result to the last three digits of the North coordinates given above.

2. From the year that Treaty No. 7 was signed subtract the year Cardinal built the crude cabin and then to this result add 13 and then add this result to the last three digits of the West coordinates given above.

You will then have the coordinates of the cache.

Please respect the prayer stones and other artifacts left by others at the memorial cairn and do not disturb or move them. However take the time to read both plaques at the site, enjoy the peaceful country side, and visualize in your mind the small church, and dwellers of the plains who came to worship in the late 19th Century.
