How Geocaching Works
An ammo can located near the heart of what once was a great social experiment. This was originally placed as a multi, but apparently the coordinates for the first stage were off, and so now it is a traditional.
Please enter Soul City at the main entrance located at N 36.24.518 / W 078.15.825 in order to avoid accidentally crossing private property. The coordinates take you to a well marked ammo can in the common area.
THE STORY OF SOUL CITY - An Unrealized Utopia
Soul City was intended to be a model community where all races could live in harmony. It was the brainchild of minister Floyd McKissick, a civil rights leader and director of the Congress of Racial Equality. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) financed the development of Soul City with federal loan guarantees, grants and contracts totalling 31 million dollars between 1971 and 1978. The community was initially established on 5000 acres with infrastructure including a water treatment plant, a clinic, basketball and tennis courts and pool. However, industry failed to relocate to the area as planned, and without jobs, the city failed to reach its initial ambitions. Lawsuits and investigations into the use of funds forced default and foreclosure in 1980.
Rev. McKissick envisioned a community of more the 45,000 by the year 2000 (sadly, he passed away in 1991). Although about a thousand people do live presently in Soul City, there is a strange and haunting silence to this place that one held such hope and promise.
