The second annual "Get Useless In Eustis" event will take place on
Saturday, September 26, 2009 in Eustis, Maine. The Stratton-Eustis
Community Building (coords are for there) has been reserved for
that day and will serve as a meeting place. It will open at 7:00
AM, and breakfast will be served shortly thereafter. Four new
caches will be published and posted at 8:00 AM. The building has
two restrooms, a large completely equipped kitchen, a stage, lots
of tables and chairs. There will be a registration table, door
prizes, and a TB/coin swap table. NEW THIS YEAR: a prize for the
best photo taken in this area and a prize for the "most innovative"
cache container. Winners to be determined by popular vote. Coffee
will be provided throughout the day. A pot-luck dinner will be
served around 5:00 PM. Last years dinner was a big success so
please bring whatever you did the last time, if possible. No
alcoholic beverages. And no dogs please, unless they are VERY
small.
We have also reserved both group sites at Cathedral Pines
Campground for Friday and Saturday nights, which you may use for
free. Or you may reserve (and pay for) your own site by calling
207-246-3491. The group sites are very large and have fireplaces,
picnic tables and Porta-Potties only but you may use any of the
facilities at the campground across the street. That has hot
showers, flush toilets, a dumping station, rec room, small
playground and a swim beach. Canoes and kayaks are for rent or you
may bring your own. If you're a loner, I can show you several
out-of-the way primitive sites. Not into camping? We have four
motels and two B&Bs. Alcoholic beverages and dogs are allowed
at the campground. Last year there was a campfire each night in the
group area that all may go to.
On Saturday you can go caching and find all you want from
Kingfield to Rangeley, Stratton to Chain of Ponds. If you like to
climb mountains, put a team together and do Cranberry Peak in the
Bigelows, or Kennebago, Sugarloaf (two caches there), or for the
less adventurous, Bald Mountain in Oquossoc. Or go kayaking on
Flagstaff Lake and get yourself a University of Eustis Bachelor of
Geocaching degree by finding the specified 14 caches. There are
caches that can be reached only by boat, and some that can be found
by foot or boat. Last year it was popular to get together and do
the SW East Kennebago Mt 4x4 Progressive Ride ( 7 caches) and some
people even rode their mountain bikes back down. We will be happy
to help you make a list of places to stop and caches to find.
Here's an excuse to visit or re-visit this lovely area, meet new
geocachers, talk shop, compare GPSrs, get lots of exercise, just
have fun!
Any questions, please e-mail kayaking loon through
geocaching.com. I'll be happy to help you with any plans or
arrangements. This is a beautiful area and we hope many of you can
come to enjoy it!
I had a request for the coords for the group sites. Group Site #
1 is at 45 11. 347 070 27.940. And Group Site # 2 is just beyond
it.
