Geocache Description:

First in the Series: Wonders of the Reef.

Exit I-70 @ N 38 55.527 W 110 25.019. This is close to hiway marker 147.You need to be headed west bound on I-70. If you are east bound, there is a place where you can cross over. There is no formal exit, just a dirt road with a gate.

We spent several days exploring the reef looking for interesting sights. We placed seven caches that will take you to some of the spots we found.

Standing at this cache looking to the west, you will see the San Rafael Reef. This is the Eastern edge of the San Rafael Swell. The Reef was formed when an underground lava dome pushed up a large area forming the Swell. The dome pushed up an area about 80 miles long and 35 miles wide. Rock that used to 5000 feet underground is now exposed on the top of the Swell.

As you climb the reef and move from layer to layer of rock, you are literally walking back in time over rock that was formed millions of years ago. You can view this here: Geology of the Reef

The caches are numbered in order of difficulty, first is easiest, last is hardest in terms of terrain. For the last two a length of rope might come in handy unless you are really good at rock scrambling.
