The San Cristóbal and Los Perules mining reserve

During the 19th and 20th centuries, mining and industry in Mazarrón underwent revival when the old Roman mines in the San Cristóbal and Los Perules, Pedreras Viejas and Coto Fortuna Reserves, together with some other more minor installations, began to be worked once more. This recovery of the mining activity involved the creation of a large foundry which was located beside the Port of Mazarrón and where the minerals extracted from the mines where processed. The modern age of splendour of the Mazarrón mines was set in motion in 1880, with investment from companies such as a French firm named "The Company of the Eagles" which invested heavily in Mazarrón and had financial backing from major European firms, the Rothchild family, for example. The mines had been worked many centuries earlier, in Roman times, when Mazarrón's special geological characteristics were exploited in addition to its easy access by sea and proximity to Carthago Nova, the distribution centre for raw materials manufactured.
