Geocache Description:

This journey is part of a cache series commemorating the travels of Leatherman in the late 1800s.

Leatherman once roamed SW Connecticut and SE New York from 1858 to 1889. He traveled a 365-mile loop between the Connecticut and Hudson rivers. Approximately every month he would repeat his journey. The man spoke primarily with grunts or gestures and dressed in crudely stitched leather from his hat to his shoes. The suit was made of soft-tanned calfskin leather and weighed about sixty pounds. He would sleep outside year-round mostly in caves around Connecticut and New York. The Leatherman was known to frequent the Forestville section of Bristol on his travels. He would recieve food from local acquaintances and pick up tobacco at the train station near to the cache sight. Historian Dan W. DeLuca was gracious enough to provide the following Hartford Globe article from July 12, 1885.

"The Old Leather Man has been an object of curiosity as he passed on his regular trips at intervals of 34 days for the past 27 years and only fragments of his history have been written, but Chauncey L. Hotchkiss of Forestville has for some years been corresponding with persons about the old man's mysterious pilgrimages till he has an account of nearly all his stopping places and many interesting facts concerning his singular life and habits. Stopping at one of his principal huts in the southeast part of Harwinton, Saturday night, July 4th, the old man-according to his time table, which is scarcely ever varied an hour starting easterly about 10 o’clock Sunday morning and passing through the edge of Burlington, in Forestville at 2 p.m., and took dinner with I. W. Beach a gentleman who takes much interest in the old man and is one of the few with whom Old Leathery converses. When the strange pilgrim arrived in Forestville last Sunday, a considerable crowd had assembled to see him as he trudged along and some of the hoodlum element gave him so lively a reception that he was very glad to spy Mr. Hotchkiss to whom he hastily fled. So rough was the crowd toward the un-offensive old fellow that perhaps to prevent future annoyance he will after this avoid Forestville in the pilgrimage."

The leather Man never avoided Forestville and the word went out too all the people in Forestville not to bother him. He was protected by Hotchkiss, Beach and others. He would stop at Isaac Beach's house for food and Forestville (East Bristol) was one of his favorite stopping places.
