Geocache Description:

This cache is one of a pair placed near oaks on the banks of the River Tay which have a connection to the performing arts. The other cache is “Arty Oaks - Music”.

The Birnam Oak is reputed to be the last surviving remnant of Birnam Wood, the huge oak forest made famous by Shakespeare in his Scottish play. In the play, Macbeth declares:
“I will not be afraid of death and bane
Till Birnam Forest come to Dunsinane”

A messenger then reports later:
“As I did stand my watch upon the Hill
I look’d toward Birnam, and anon me thought
The Wood began to move”

This was Malcolm’s doing - he had stripped the branches from the trees of Birnam Wood to camouflage his army on the way to Macbeths stronghold at Dunsinane. Cache Connection - “That Scottish Play!” by Snaik (GCJEZ9).

Park in Birnam near to the Beatrix Potter garden. Another Cache Connection - “Put this on my Slate!!" by Snaik (GCJD9K) - gives parking co-ordinates for the garden. The path to Birnam Oak and the riverside walk starts just behind the bus shelter opposite the entrance to the garden.

Birnam Oak can be found at N56 33.668 W003 34.555. The age of the tree is uncertain, however it certainly looks medieval - it’s a gnarled old character, with a trunk girth of 18 feet, and long spreading branches, the lower of which are propped up by crutches. The first 3 metres (10 ft) of its trunk is hollow - but that would be too obvious a hiding place for this cache! The cache is slightly further along from the tree. Please make sure that it is hidden so that it cannot be seen from the side.

Cache contents at time of replacing:
Eraser set
Batteries
Trouble Doll
Keyring
Yo-yo
Fridge Magnet
Snail Toy
Playing Cards

After you have found the cache you can continue upstream along the riverside walk if you wish to seek out this caches “other half”.
