Geocache Description:

One of the US Army's least known transportation solutions was housed at this location for a brief time.

Normally, you might "walk a mile for camel" but here, you won't need to take more than five or six steps.

The town of Benicia, California is rich in California history. The town's museum is located in a set of locally quarried sandstone buildings nicknamed the "Camel Barns."

How did they come to earn this nickname? Here's what the official website (www.beniciahistoricalmuseum.org) says...

"In the 1850's and 1860's, the US Army experimented using camels, imported from the Mideast, as pack animals. After the advent of the Civil War the experiment was abandoned. The remaining camels were shipped to the Benicia Arsenal where they were auctioned to the public."

These warehouses were briefly converted during 1863-1864 to barns to house the Army's camel herd.

To claim this cache, visit the buildings and find the sign near the gates. Email MotorBug the with the original cost for each of the two buildings as stated on the sign and then log your find.

If you prefer, submit a selfie of you/group/family on the grounds. Just not a picture of the sign.
