Wedding Cake Underneath the Arches Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

PurplePenguin: I came to do my annual maintenance check and discovered that the tall hollow beech tree where the cache was hidden has broken off and most of it is now on the ground. I have removed the cache, which had survived the tree coming down. I live a long way away, so cannot maintain it regularly and the time has come to archive it. Apologies to anyone who looks for it today. The cache container is looking remarkably good considering it has spent 10 years in a tree! PurplePenguin

Geocache Description:

A short walk on grass up a slight incline and through a wood.

Herefordshire has many unusual and interesting churches and this one is my favourite. The original Norman church at Shobdon was demolished in around 1750 by Richard Bateman of Shobdon Court and replaced with the current one, which was designed by Horace Walpole in the Gothick Style. It is the only Rococo church in England and the interior of it reminds me of a wedding cake, hence the name of the cache. The chancel arch and 2 doorways from the original church were saved and erected on a nearby hill as a folly. They were once elaborately carved but exposure to the weather has worn them away. There are information boards near them which shows what they once looked like. The church is accessed from the hamlet of Easthampton and is signed off the B4362. You can park at the church, where there is a car park and a small Visitors’ Centre (opening hours vary). There are toilets at the Visitors’ Centre if it is open. It is possible to access the cache from the road at Uphampton through the woods but if you do this you will miss the point of the cache, which is to visit Shobdon Church and Arches. Your GPSr may well lose the signal in the trees, in which case, please use the clue. The cache, which is suitable for children and dogs on leads is in a medium sized plastic box.

3rd June 2007 - Update - the woods have been thinned out and the path through the woods that the cache was on originally has disappeared. The undergrowth hasn't had time to grow up yet but I expect that it will soon now there is more light. If this happens I will review the cache's location. PP
