The Los Angeles County
Quadrangle Challenge
The objective of this
challenge is to find a cache in each of 81 USGS 7.5 minute
topographical map quadrangles that cover Los Angeles
County.
You MAY NOT take credit for
finds made prior to the creation of the Los Angeles County
Quadrangle Challenge (1 December 2006).
To complete this challenge and find
the final cache, you must
- Find a cache in each quadrangle
shown in the attached grid.
- Create a bookmark this Challenge
cache and bookmark one cache for each quad. Indicate in the
Comments section the name of the quad and the date of the
find.
- Send me a Pocket Query of the
bookmark of the caches you’ve found for each quadrangle. If
you aren't a Premium Member, send me the bookmark.
- Once you send me the list of
caches, I will acknowledge receiving it as soon as possible, but in
all cases within 24 hours.
- Following that, I will review and
verify the list. The review process will not take more than 72
hours.
- Once everything checks out, I will
then send you the correct coordinates for the final
cache!
- The find cannot be logged on-line
until the physical container is found and the log
signed.
- If you have any questions as to
what quad a cache is in or would like to like be know how you are
progressing, please e-mail me at coakford@yahoo.com.
If I cannot temporarily meet the 24 hour notification or 72 hour
verification commitments then I will post a note on the cache page
to let everyone know what's going on.
A special thanks to
mjp303 for the
(GCYNR9) Bay Area Quadrangle Challenge which
this cache was based on.

If you would like a .gpx or .loc
file of the quad corners, please let me know. The color map
was done in Streets & Trip '06. If you would like that
file, it is also available.
The guidelines:
- The posted coordinates are not the
actual coordinates for the cache. The actual cache may actually be
quite some distance from these coordinates!
- Generally accepted rules,
guidelines and conditions for logging a cache find apply. These
must be bona fide caches listed on Geocaching.com that you have
personally (physically) found and logged.
- To level the playing field (and
perhaps even handicap things for cachers who have many finds), you
may not include caches found prior 1 December 2006.
- If you have found all the caches in
a particular quadrangle, then you are allowed to revisit one of
your previous finds to complete that quadrangle. Please bear in
mind that the determination of whether or not you have visited all
of the caches in a quadrangle will be as of the day you submit your
cache list for verification.
- All cache types count as finds with
the exception of events (CITO included) and locationless
caches.
- For the purposes of this challenge,
the coordinates listed on the cache page will determine which
quadrangle puzzle and multi caches are located in, and not
the coordinates of the actual physical cache.
- All caches found must be located
in Los Angeles County. For quads along the county
boundaries, please pick a cache inside Los Angeles
County.
- The boundary of each quadrangle in
the challenge is determined by the coordinates listed on the USGS
quadrangle map of the same name.
- If for any reason it becomes
impossible to find a cache in a particular quadrangle, that
quadrangle will be dropped from the challenge.
- While you may have others with you
when you find the final cache, only those who have fulfilled ALL
criteria for this cache will be allowed to log it as a
find.
Congratulations
to Dooley and Ben for the co-FTF on the Challenge. They
completed all the requirements on Saturday, 1/6/07 and then found
the final cache on Sunday, 1/7/07.
And
congratulations to
Journeymnn (and his son, J. Cacher) on making this cache his
#1000 and for the first find since 7/07.

November 8 by Gummyfrog (619 found) After a weekend of hitting a few caches in the desert I am going to take a try at this great challenge. It will be a long road but I have a feeling it will be well worth the time.

#1000 When we first started caching 10 months ago, we saw this challenge and thought who would be crazy enough to drive to the far reaches of the County to find 81 caches? Today we joined the ranks of those who've conquered this challenge! Living in the far southern reaches of the County made it just a little more difficult. We managed to log more than 60 of the quads on the way out of town on road trips to Mammoth, to Yosemite, to Vegas, to softball tournaments and to Grandma's house. We spent a really nice afternoon caching up the Angeles Crest Highway and hiking in to caches hidden on lush forested hillsides. A couple of weeks later, those same hillsides and caches were decimated by the massive Station Fire. On our one quad run day shortly thereafter, we found caches in 19 quads on the north side of that fire. The sight of the giant pyrocumulonimbus cloud looming over the San Gabriels and dominating the horizon was quite sobering. We really enjoyed visiting all parts of this huge County. We especially liked the wilderness hides, and those in the northern, more rural areas. There were some places where it seemed like we were in the Sierra foothills, the scenery was so beautiful. Thanks, GeoCraig for the journey and the Challenge. We signed the log, took nothing, and left a Disneyland "I'm Celebrating" pin to commemorate this awesome milestone find. (#1000)
[view this log] | September 26 by Davedoo (968 found) Got 23 caches today in 23 quads in the Northwestern sector of LA County. This was the 2nd of two mega days I knew I would have to do to claim this challenge. On the first, may 23, I got 31 caches and was out of the house from before 5:00am to after 10:00pm. Today I left just as early but got back at 7:00pm. I appreciated that, in the end, Cobblestone Mountain was not as scary as had been built up in my mind. 1/2 mile hike and 1/2 hour search. Yeah, it was a long search but it doesn't need to be. The Sleepy Valley and Green Valley quads had me a little nervous too since there aren't too many quick grabs available without driving lots of extra mile. But, turns out it was OK. This brings my quad total to 71 with only 10 quads to go - and they are in "mainstream" LA County. No more of this remote stuff. (Fun as it was).
[view this log] | August 12 by benandjayme (1418 found) Well, it took a whole bunch of work, but we are proud to report that we can now claim this as #1000 for us!!!When we decided about a month ago to focus our efforts on the Quad Challenge, we took a look at our numbers and figured we had a pretty good shot to follow in Journeymnn's footsteps and make this our 1000th. We did a lot of planning to make that happen and spent three VERY full days roaming the outer sections of the county to fill in our map. What an adventure it was to see all the corners of our incredibly diverse county! Desert, coastline, mountains, cities...we've got it all. When we took up the challenge we'd only completed 14 quads in the course of our prior caching. Finding caches in the remaining 67 quads provided a whole bunch of great adventures, but here are just a few of the highlights (check out our photo highlights as well): - "Piru Creek" (GC12NTR) - Anybody who has checked out the Cobblestone Mountain quad knows that this one is the only relatively easy cache in the quad. That's why we were a bit dismayed when we were still empty-handed after about 30 minutes of searching. Knowing we couldn't really give up if we wanted to complete the quad, we dug in our heels and finally moved the right rock pile. - "Liebre Summit Cache" (GCKFA1) - It was great fun driving up the Old Ridge Route from Sandberg and imagining turn of the century folks puttering around the tight curves at 15 miles an hour on the original road. Great panoramic views just up the road from GZ, too, which we got to share with a Hasidic hippie. - "Big Brother Is Listening" (GC1N7QV) - Of the many strange things to be seen out in the desert, one of the strangest was this little area of rock-lined lanes out in the middle of nowhere. Who built this stuff? Why? - "Kill Bill's Church" (GC1BWC1) - A bit of cinematic caching as the last find on the first day of a full caching weekend. Followed by a unexpectedly lovely evening camping at Saddleback Butte State Park. (Ignore your guidebook when it tells you not to camp in the desert in the summer. It can be magical.) - "Cloud Cone Christmas Cache - C4" (GC1M459 - We're definitely mountain people, so as much as we loved the desert caches we were soooooo happy to get up into the mountains again after a day and a half wandering in Antelope Valley. - "The Bus Stop" (GC1H7N7) - Little did we know that the day we planned to get the Long Beach quad was the day of the Long Beach Jazz Festival. Needless to say, some serious stealthiness was in order due to the extreme muggle factor. - "(Almost) Land's End" (GC10YMT) - Our unofficial 82nd quad. In a tiny little sliver of Los Angeles County that falls in the Seal Beach quad and is thus not a part of the official challenge. We decided to do it just for fun, though, and we were very glad we did because we were treated to a great sunset over Long Beach as we made the long walk out the jetty. - "The Great Puente Hills Mall Run #12" (GC1AMTR) - Sort of an inglorious cache for our final quad (La Habra) - particularly since we were rummaging around in the mall's bushes at almost midnight - but we were insanely excited to find it and complete the journey anyway. All told, we couldn't have picked a better challenge for our milestone cache. Huge thanks to GeoCraig for setting up the challenge and for his encouragement when we decided to give it a go. We'll be hard-pressed to find a better target for our next big milestone. And congrats to those who have completed the challenge before us. Now that we've done it ourselves, we can appreciate the magnitude of your achievement. One last note for anybody out there thinking about doing this great challenge: we did 90% of our caches in flip flops and 100% of our driving in a Ford Taurus. In other words, don't convince yourself that you need a 4WD vehicle and tons of physical effort to do this one. All you need is a healthy dose of caching dedication and some time on your hands

| August 3 by benandjayme (1418 found) 2 days, 1 lovely night camping at Saddleback Butte, nearly 500 miles driven, and 97 finds later we've gone from 14 quads done to 63 quads done! After a lot of careful planning we spent all weekend working on the northern and eastern parts of the county and we got all 49 quads we had planned on, including the somewhat tougher ones along the northern edge and in the mountains, as well as the ever popular Cobblestone Mountain quad! We're not done yet, but we got a lot closer over the weekend and had a blast doing it. Now to log all those finds...
