The territory of which the county of Pike is a part was originally occupied by the Chickasaw, Choctaw and Natchez Indians. The region was given the name of Louisiana in 1683 by M. LaSalle. It changed hands several times, was part of the Georgia Territory and then became known as the Mississippi Territory. It was first part of Marion County and in 1815 divided to form the county of Pike. In 1816 the area was given the name of Holmesville and was selected for the seat of justice, not only on account of its being near the geographical center of the county, but also from a picturesque point of view. Early records of this area were destroyed by fire but Holmesville's history is closely interwoven with that of Pike County. The square where the Pioneer Citizens building is located is a sacred and historical spot. A plaque commemorating its dedication reads: Marked by Judith Robinson Chapter DAR McComb In memory of pioneer citizens who localted their first seat of government here at Holmesville 1815.
