Geocache Description:

We were looking for more family caches near Kamloops and decided to add some. this is an easy caches for kids, the terrain is flat and even toddlers could manage it.
This is the first of “The Lorax” series of caches. Two others in the area are “Where the Grickle Grass grows” and “and the wind smells slow and sour when it blows”. Please feel free to extend the series.
Many of the Ponderosa pine were attacked and killed by bark beetles in 2006. The area was then aggressively “salvage” logged in 2008 and 2009. The native grasses and flowers have done well with the reduction of tree cover, but unfortunately so have some weeds. Enjoy the walk and think of the Lorax as you follow the series.
You can walk directly to this cache from anywhere along the Lafarge road, but there is a dirt road that leads you very close. The road is drivable for all but the lowest of clearance cars, but the walk from the parking coordinates 50 38.580N 120 3.750 is nice. Find a road heading south east and follow it till you get close to the cache.
$5.00 Tim Horton’s card for FTF and lots of trade items for kids.

congratualions to Go. rachel for FTF.

The Lorax is a children’s book written by Dr. Seuss and published in 1971. We used to read it to our children. It’s message is still relevant today and speaks to global warming, un- ethical logging practices, industry greediness, pollution and disregard for the environment.

In the book, the “Lorax“ is a character who speaks for the trees against the greedy “Once-ler” who chopped down all the trees and built factories.

The first page of the book is:
“At the far end of town
Where the Grickle-grass grows
And the wind smells slow – and- sour when it blow
And no birds ever sing excepting old crows....
Is the Street of the Lifted Lorax”

We think this area is relevant to the Lorax because of the devastation from the pine-beetle and then the aggressive logging. It has also received a lot of damage from dirt bikers and people dumping garbage. Perhaps some attention from geocachers will help protect and clean up this area.

Families walking with children should be aware that sometimes there are a lot of dirt bikers around.

Here is a link to Couloir’s article about the Lorax series of caches on the Interior Geocaching Website.
(visit link)

He has included a map of the area and has added to the cache series in the same area. There is still lots of room for more.

“Unless someone like you
Cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.
It’s not.”
