Geocache Description:

******* Part of this trail has been closed due to a small bridge wash out. The cache can be accessed at the end of the trail on Spring Garden Street or you can always get your feet wet and cross the Letort.******

This cache is located in an area rich in history and nature. Go for a walk and pick this one up. There may be fishing and walking muggles around. This cache is located on the new extension. The old railroad bed has been leveled and the old ties have been removed.

The South Mountain Railroad ran along the bank of the Letort and the current hiking trial follows its old bed. Construction began in 1869 and was completed in 1870. The route began at Pine Grove Furnace and passed through Laurel Forge, Mt. Holly, Mt. Holly Springs, across the Yellow Breeches, then to Bonny Brook and the Letort then finally into Carlisle where it joined the Cumberland Valley Railroad. It was used mostly to transport ore from Pine Grove to Harrisburg and beyond.

In 1978, the LeTort Regional Authority established the LeTort Spring Run Nature Trail after the Reading Railroad line was abandoned in the wake of Hurricane Agnes in 1972. The1.4mile nature trial runs from LeTort Park in the borough of Carlisle to the Bonny Brook Road Bridge, within the abandoned railroad right-of-way.

This short, tranquil trail runs close to LeTort Spring Run through a mixture of deciduous trees and lowland marshes bristling with tall grasses and cattails. Bring your fishing gear; the LeTort is one of the finest limestone spring trout streams in the nation.
From LeTort Spring Run Park, the trail traces the stream for a short distance then detours around some private property by following East Willow Court to South Bedford Street. At the end of South Bedford the rail-trail picks up again on the edge of the wood line behind Lamberton Middle School. From here, the trail follows the banks of the LeTort to Bonnybrook Road.
The LeTort Spring Run and the surrounding woods and meadows provide habitat for a wide variety of wild life from filed mice to white tail deer, ducks and geese and of course the highly selective LeTort brown trout.

The trail is open all year to walkers, anglers, bird watchers, and cross-country skiers. Biking, horseback riding, atv's, and snowmobiles are not allowed on the trail.
