Geocache Description:

Arrive at Belalie East and find the Hall and read the necessary information on foundation stones and cairns.

The roads are generally good gravel roads, but like all gravel roads please take care. The last km may be a little rough depending on the weather.

The cache is a small plastic screw top container containing log book and small swaps.

The Belalie East area was first settled in the early 1870’s and refers more to a district rather than a town. The area was one of the first portions of the Hundred of Belalie to be offered for sale. Many of the first settlers were staunch Presbyterians.

While there was no actual town, a school was built in 1878 and stayed open until the 1950’s. George C Holmer was the longest serving Headmaster from 1885 – 1906, a total of 22 years.

The small hall was built after WWI and played host to many functions such as dances, school concerts, weddings, table tennis competitions (prior to 1971 when all competition moved into Jamestown to the Table Tennis Centre) and many other fundraising occasions.

Today the area is still valuable farming land, however many of the smaller holdings have been absorbed into larger farms. Crops sown include wheat, barley, lupins, canola, peas, beans and lucerne. Sheep and cattle are an important commodity as well.

When you arrive at GZ looking east you will find an amazing view of the “New Forest” which has been rapidly growing since 2007. Some of you may hate them, but others are fascinated. When completed this section of the “New Forest” will be home to about 109 new trees!

If you walk up the road a short distance from gz you will be able to look west to the ”Old Forest” at Bundaleer which is the oldest planted forest in SA. On a clear day you will see a great view in either direction, but different.
