How Geocaching Works
Located on Sam's Hill, the highest point in Washburn County, Wisconsin.
Located north of Birchwood, Wisconsin, on Washburn County Forest land. There are several reasonable routes to this cache. You could park at the Sawmill Lake County Campground and follow some of the canoe portage trails. There are also parking spots along Birchwood Firelane that access logging trails that run through the area. You can also go with that old standby...bushwacking. Depending upon your choice of routes, the hike in will probably range from about .7 to 1.2 miles (one way), though coming in from the east or south may reduce this distance (beware of private property if choosing these alternatives). The cache is an ammo can. Find it, and you can claim to have trekked to the county high point (according to the Washburn County Forestry Department, which puts the elevation at around an ear-popping 1512 feet).
Don't cache during hunting season (there is a deer stand nearby). Beware of ticks, deer flies, mosquitoes, etc.
