Indian Hannah Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

SquirtGunn: Almost 300 geocachers have logged this cache - most of them found this cache while visiting Longwood Gardens during the Christmas season which is next door. At the beginning of this cache's life, there were so many DNFs that I placed a second container next to the original, so this doubled your chances of finding the cache. It was not difficult, I thought. Indian Hannah is a nice story of a local Indian. Unfortunately this road is now a private road and there is no longer public access. Sadly, I must say goodbye to one of my favorite caches.

Geocache Description:

INDIAN HANNAH (1730 - 1802)

The last of the Indians in Chester County, was born in the vale about 300 yards to the east on the land of the protector of her people the Quaker Assemblyman, William Webb. Her mother was Indian Sarah and her grandmother was Indian Jane.

Their totem: the tortoise.
The Lenape creation myth maintains that Kishelemukong, the Creator, brought a turtle up from the ocean. It grew into an island (North America). The first men and women sprouted from a tree on the turtle’s back.

About the time Indian Hannah was born there was an influx of English, Scotch-Irish, and German settlers who ignored colonial land laws protecting Indians. Europeans wanted all the land. Most Lenapes were pushed west to the Susquehanna and Ohio river valleys or died of war and European diseases like smallpox and malaria.

Indian Hannah lived along the Brandwine and made baskets and brooms and sold herbs. She was know as a healer.
