A cache in memory of my father. A nice stroll on a trail along the woods.
I introduced my Dad to geocaching several years ago. He told me he was going to place his own cache some day. He was diagnoised with cancer in early 2005 and passed away in
August of 2005. While I was in his garage looking for something, I came across a geocache my Dad had put together ready to be hidden. I brought the cache back with me from Arizona where he had been making his home. I hid the cache on what would have been his 79th birthday in memory of my Dad. My Dad lived in Des Moines from 1966 to 1989. He served as Captain in the Des Moines Fire Department (District 26) during the 23 years he lived here.
The fire station is located about a mile NE of the cache.
He was an active member of the Des Moines Methodist Church.
The church is located about a mile NW of the cache. Our former home is 5 blocks due West of the cache. As a kid my friends and I rode our dirt bikes in these woods, built forts, built trails and spent many hours getting dirty and wet out here. The creek to the West used to have small trout in it. We would occasionaly dam up the creek and drain the deeper spots to catch fish.
If you have memories of my Dad or these woods, please include them when you log the cache. I would love to read them.
The cache is located just off the Barnes Creek Nature Trail. The south end of the trail is at the Kent - Des Moines Road. There is no safe parking there. The north end of the trail is at the corner of S. 228th & 15th Ave S.
It takes off just SW of the curb cut at the south end of a small park. Ample parking is available at this location.
The GPSr signal was poor when I placed the cache in December. Add another star difficulty when the trees leaf out.
Note: As of July 2016 the city is no longer maintaining the trail. It is becoming overgrown, some bush whacking may be needed to reach the cache.
