Through the research I have done with my “Public Opinion Poll” cache I have learned that a large portion of us are Rock & Rollers. With that in mind I am planting a series of puzzle hides pertaining to some favorite Rock & Roll albums.
This cache is dedicated to the Beatles and their “Abbey Road” album. The Beatles, consisting of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr released their 11th studio album “Abby Road” in 1969. Amid high tensions between the band members it would turn out to be their last album released before their break up in 1970. “Abbey Road” is viewed by many as the Beatles greatest work and ranked by several publications as one of the best albums ever. It is by far the Beatles best seller.
The response to the album was phenomenal selling 4 million copies within the first 2 months of release. On the charts in the U.K. it debuted at #1. It stayed there for 11 weeks, was bumped for 1 week by the Rolling Stones “Let It Bleed” then returned to #1 for another 6 weeks. In the U.S. the response was similar. Debuting at 178 on Billboard’s 200 list, it jumped to #1 by week 3. In all taking the top spot for 11 non-consecutive weeks and as of 2001 sold over 12 million copies.
The “Abbey Road” album cover is also surrounded in folklore. After the rumor had spread in 1967 of McCartney dying in a car crash many people were looking for clues of his death such as listening to songs backwards and interpreting lyrics. When “Abbey Road’ was released the rumors were rampid. The picture of the four members, crossing the road in single file was perceived to be a funeral march. With Lennon leading dressed in white, he was thought to be a preacher or heavenly figure. Followed by Starr in black as an undertaker or mourner, McCartney, 3rd in line was barefoot and out of step with the others symbolizing a corpse. He was followed by Harrison, dressed in denim as the gravedigger.
Even the background of the cover became legendary. The Volkswagen to the left had it’s license stolen repeatedly and the car now is in a German museum. The man to the right was an American tourist, who it wasn’t until months after “Abbey Road’ was released, realized he was part of history.
