About the Salem Oregon Electric Depot and Building
This cache will take you to a former Oregon Electric Building which was the office building and depot for the Oregon Electric Railway. The electric interurban passenger trains would stop right in the middle of High Street here to pick up and drop off passengers. One could take the train to Portland or Eugene and stops in between. Service to Portland opened in 1908 and to Eugene in 1912. The OE Building here opened in 1912 with the Eugene extension. The passenger trains ceased to exist in 1933 and rails on High Street were paved over. Anytime a paving project occurs along High Street the tracks are made visible again.
The OE Building at one point was called the Hubbard Building. Today the main entrance to the building states it is the Oregon Building. The former railway ticket office was in the northeast corner of the building.
It is hard to imagine trains running on High Street, or Streetcars meeting the trains on State Street. t is likely due to the trains that the Elisnore Theatre opened across the street in 1926 and the former Capital Theatre around the corner on State Street.
It is sad the trains are gone today, but they are not forgotten. It is a delight to see the old OE building surviving along with the Elisnore Theater!
