A short easy walk to a 2000 year old site.
Stanwick Camp is the largest Iron Age Fort in Britain. It covers approx. 850 acres, and there are 4 miles of ramparts and ditches.
The Fort was the headquarters of Venutius, king of the Brigantes, who held out against the Romans for 25 years in the 1st Century AD. Eventually he was betrayed by his wife Cartimandua, and the Fort was taken by the 9th Legion. This was the last major centre of resistance to Rome in the North of England.
The Fort has been excavated on a number of occasions, most notably by Sir Mortimer Wheeler in the 1950s, this was one of the first times that archaeology was shown on TV.
A short section of the rampart and ditch has been restored to its original height - it would have been a formidable obstacle to any attackers.
