Geocache Description:

This cache is located near Burley in the New Forest. It is just over 1/2 a mile from the car park to the cache and although unsuitable for traditional pushchairs it is probably ok for all terrain three wheelers. It may get a little wet underfoot in dodgy weather so i would recommend appropriate footwear if you go in SUMMER!!!!!This cache has been placed within the Forestry Commision Guidelines http://www.gagb.org.uk/glad/agreement_view.php?p=1

This cache is called Smugglers SandWitch for the following reasons-
SMUGGLERS- All around this area smugglers would bring their wares to Ridley Wood to sell at a secret market. They would bring lace from Venice and Bruges,brocades from the Middle east and embroideries from all over the world, to name just a few.Many years ago, my father and i found an old brass hinge/plate with grandiose french engraving on it here, which we believed maybe came from a smuggled Brandy bottle. On the right of the main path going into the wood is a sunken/dug out gully which it is said,was covered over and where the market took place and that people came from as far as Bristol to buy the contraband.

SAND-A couple of years ago i drove across the Sahara Desert and brought back some sand from a dune in Mauritania in Western Africa. The dunes coordinates are N19.49.054 W016.08.939. I decided that the bottle of sand had been kicking around the house for too long so have left 65 small bags of it in the cache for you! Dont be greedy, when its gone, its gone!! :-)

WITCH- Er...well....It is near Burley which is famous for witchcraft..and it er,well ..thats it really!!!

Have fun and dont forget to visit Burley Village with its interesting pubs & shops, particularly the Queens Head where every self respecting smuggler got hammered...in the alcoholic sense!
