This is an easy park and grab located at beginning of the mighty Kennebec River.
Alewifes are a herring like fish that have been recently introduced into many fresh water lakes in Central Maine. They are "anadromous" which means they spawn in fresh water and then return to salt water. Three Mile Pond and Webber Pond are local examples of ponds where large schools are seen in early spring. While not considered high on the food chain, they are not bad smoked and provide fodder for striped bass. Alewifes are also a very popular baitfish for our lobster industry. Recent studies show that alewifes may provide a water quality benefit to lakes with high phosphorous content because they eat phosphorous and then export it when they return down stream after spawning. This cache was placed at the Richard Francis Lavigne bridge on Route 15 above Greenville where the Kennebec River starts. It is a popular spot for Salmon fishermen who frequently fish out of anchored drift boats in the current just below the damn. Congrats to number seven for a First To Find!!!!
