The location is the most remote location possible on the Santa Monica Mts. Backbone Trail. Stay on official trails. Distance to the site will be 6 to 7 miles depending on the starting point. Altitude gain is about 2,000 ft. from western approaches 3,000 ft. from the eastern approach. Trails are not well maintained; rough in places and occasional episodes of poison oak and ticks.
The name of the cache is a confirmation to its location. You can find the name inscribed there. The site is on the Santa Monica Mountains Backbone Trail; as remote as you can get from any public road. The site is well known to people who have passed by, but not marked on the maps. It is in a designated wilderness area, so no bikes or helicopters or any other mechanical conveyances are allowed. Compared to other trails in the Santa Monica's, few people go there so the trails are not well maintained. Expect rough trails, poison oak and ticks, however expect spectacular views and wonderful displays of wildflowers before the dry season.

Because it is on the Bacbone Trail, one of the few official patches was left in the cache. For the sun, sun screen is in it and for poison oak, a bottle of Tecnu. The is a note pad and pen. The cache is under the overhang of two touching rocks. The cache is a clear plastic jug with a white, wide mouth top. It is about 6 inches in diameter.

The location can be reach without trampeling vegetation if you are careful.

There are several starting points. The shortest and easiest round trip would start from Rancho Sierra Vista. A mile longer start would be from Sycamore Canyon Campground. The most difficult would be from Circle X Ranch (Sandstone Peak Trailhead).

From the west you will see a sight that is comically associated with a plumber at work.

I could see the general area of the cache from a good distance away. The GPS was pointing right to it, and after reading the description I knew that's where I needed to be. Now, as far as actually getting there...good grief! It seemed like forever to hike to it! Worth the effort though. It was up here that I encountered the only other person I saw on the trails all day.

Found the cache, then took off my Camelback & GPSr, and shed my demons. What a deal. And, this cache is a "two-fer", on both the SMMHA list and the Spinal Tap list. With all that, this has to be the most valuable cache around!

Thank you for sharing this spot and keeping the memory alive. It is a special location.

I've been looking at this cache since I became serious about attempting to finish my Fizzy grid. As someone not familiar with the park, I definitely appreciated all the info on the cache page. But 12-14 miles, ack! We've never hiked that far. After researching and pondering (Trails of Point Mugu State Park was a great resource), we decided to come from Rancho Sierra Vista and bring our bikes for the fire road. As Boney Mountain loomed closer approaching from the west, we were relieved when we spotted the tell-tale plumber rocks that signaled we didn't have to hike all the way up there. Once we reached GZ, mdawaffe found a nice spot to watch the show while I ignored my GPS and just used geosenses to come up with the cache that's still in great shape. We thumbed through the log book before adding our marks and heading back down. We ended up finishing the 13.5 miles in about 6.5 hours. Thanks so much for the hike, the views, the caching history, and the fun.
