Drive-in Theater series
Once upon a time Coos County had three drive-in theaters. I have fond memories as a child and young adult going to the drive in. Growing up my brothers and I would collect pop and beer bottles until we had a dollar, the exact fee per car at the Myrtle Lane Drive drive-in theater. A Safeway bag full of mom’s home popped popcorn and we were set.
The Bay drive in was a littler further for us to travel from Coquille, but I attended movies here with aunts and uncles. The theater was closed after a storm toppled the screen. I believe it was the infamous Columbus Day storm in 1962.
The Motor-vu drive-in with its 500 car capacity was the last to operate in the County. I believe it closed in the late 1970’s, It is now a place where you can find both young and old engaged in sports activities.
The Bay drive-in was located in the Eastside district of Coos Bay. Eastside was an incorporated city until the city consolidated with Coos Bay December 29, 1983.
The Shoreline drive-in was located on Bolin Island (Reedport) was built in the 1950's and disappeared a couple of decades later. This cache is an easy stop and grab - you do not need to go on private property to access the cache.
