Entlang des 106 km langen Emscher Weges
reihen sich grüne Industrieanlagen und historische Parks,
Industriedenkmale und Wassertechnik, künstliche Halden und
lebendige Natur wie an einer Schnur durch das nördlichen
Ruhrgebiet.
Along the 106 km long Emscher Route lines up green industrial
plants and historical parks, industrial monuments and water
technology, artificial coal dumps and alive nature through the
northern Ruhr Area like on a string.
350 Jahre Steinkohlenabbau haben ihre Spuren in Holzwickede
hinterlassen. Den Cache findet ihr an einem der noch vorhandenen
Zeugen der Kohlenförderung des Historische
Bergbauwanderweg. Seit dem 14. Jahrhundert wurde hier die
oberflächennah lagernde Kohle ausgegraben. Anfang des 18.
Jahrhunderts wurden die ersten Stollen gebaut. Mit der Stilllegung
der Kleinzeche Joseph im 1956 wurde das Kapitel Bergbau in
Holzwickede geschlossen.
Nicht weit entfernt liegt der Emscherquellhof, an dem der Emscher
Weg startet. Auf dem Hofgelände befindet sich auf etwa 160 m
ü. NN die Quelle der Emscher (N 51°29.433' E 007°
36.780').

350 years hard coal mining left their traces in Holzwickede. You
find the Cache at one of the still existing witnesses of the coal
mining on the historical mining industry hiking trail. Since
that 14. century here the coal was excavated near the surface.
Beginning 18. century the first drifts were built. With the closure
of the small coal-mine Joseph in 1956 the chapter of coal mining
industry in Holzwickede was closed.
Not far away the Emscherquellhof lies, at which the Emscher Route
starts. On the yard area on approximately 160 m over sealevel the
spring of the Emscher rises (N 51°29.433' E 007°
36.780').
