You are looking for a 35mm film cannister. Paths are generally good, but this cache involves walking across a mown grass area so may be hard going for strollers when wet. It is now far from the path.
What is it? Well my guess would be that it is what's left of Dallam Sluices. Sorry I forgot to take a photo of it for this cache page.
The canal ran at a higher level than the Sankey Brook, and this was a convenient site to allow excess water from the canal to run out into the brook, during or after heavy rainfall. This area was still in use up to around 1970, before the canal was in-filled in around 1974 (?).
