This cache is my replacement to "Cachin Below the I.C." But, it's a new cache hunt so come on back and log it a second time. You'll enjoy this section of trail as well. Use the following link for the Hiking Trail map: Link
The I.C. staff has been fully involved with this cache placement and suggested the general area. The area affords a high quality caching experience without threat of damaging sensitive historic ground.
There is an entrance fee for exhibits inside, but the trails are available at no charge. The hike to the Point is on a paved trail and is 3/4 of a mile in length with moderate elevation change. The entire loop trail is 2.5 miles and takes about an hour and a half. Highlights include the Oregon Trail Ruts and a recreated stamp mill and mine site. Make sure to bring plenty of water if you're doing the entire loop. It can get hot around these parts.
The cache is best accessed from the main parking lot, but access is possible from Hwy 86 via the Ruts Access Trail if the main gate is closed(see map). The Interpretive Center hours are as follows: 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. - April 1 through October 31, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. - November 1 through March 31. The parking lot opens at 8:00 a.m. daily. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time so the staff can leave on time. You'll be searching for a 50 calibre ammo box. The location affords visitors the opportunity to pause and reflect on the magnitude of the Oregon Trail migration.
