Geocache Description:

The third in the Civil War in Bucks series is a simple micro-cache overlooking a moated farm which was garrisoned by Parliament. People who logged the original cache are welcome to come and find the replaced one and log it.

Aylesbury, along with Newport Pagnell, were the key parliamentary anchors in the defense of Buckinghamshire. Aylesbury was within striking distance from the King’s base in Oxford so there was frequent skirmishing around the town.

Evidence of the fighting can be found from Thomas Tyrrel’s and John Witterong’s pleas to the House of Commoms for additional troops. They describe the attacks from Oxford,
“pillage all the towns whence they came… murder our neighbours that make any defence to preserve their goods, one woman amongst the rest big with child who could make no resistance they cut in pieces.”
Moat farm was ideally situated to guard the approaches of Aylesbury from Oxford. The farm is a late Tudor, brick and timber ‘L’ shaped building partially surrounded by a moat. It was owned by the Hampdens and garrisoned by parliament.

There was no significant fighting here but I am sure they were called upon to protect the God fearing citizens of Aylesbury from malignants.

Today the farm is privately owned and there have been extensive buildings added around the original building. The cahce can be reached from the footpath so there is no need to go worrying any of the sheep!
