Geocache Description:

They say Rome wasn't built in a day. So is true for the Grants Pass trail system. I am dedicating this cache to honor Fred Saunders, the man behind the scenes who is making the system a reality. Fred's ability to pull together bits and pieces of funding, work within a miniscule budget, recognize and seize the timing for all the different parts, and make the lines on the map become trails on the ground defines him as a true champion. The trails have been years in the making and will be more before they are finished.

According to Fred, this particular section of trail will very soon be constructed south to Cloverlawn Drive and I have no doubt it will be considered just as beautiful as the rest as we walk by the continuously flowing Fruitdale Creek.

If you visit this cache between the months of May and September, the water you will see will be that of Grants Pass Irrigation District's South Main Canal. The source of this water is of course from the Savage Rapids Dam (for another month or two anyways) located approximately 4 miles upstream. Before the next irrigation season the dam is scheduled to be removed and giant irrigation pumps will supply this canal with water. In the winter months the flow of water will be from Jewwet Creek that comes into the canal approximately 100 feet east of the bridge. Jewwet Creek is a little-known creek but has a significant basin size. During long rainstorms, Jewett Creek has the capability of sending more than a hundred cubic feet per second down this little chute towards Fruitdale Creek. That is about 3 times the amount of water than you will see in the irrigation canal during the summer. Please exercise extreme caution in this area at all times.
