Steph's Stash Two Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

LibLabLady: SAdly, ICEman and I think it best to archive this cache. There are marvelous views from up here, however in summer when the grass is high, the cache has been very tough to find.

Now, it is even worse: because of severe cutback and funding of the Washington State Parks, there is much less maintenance in the park. As we approached the mound where the cache is located, we said, "Oh, Oh," because while main trails in the big meadow are still being mowed, the trail to the base of the mound is not mowed. The nettles are taking over the trail, so it is obvious no maintenance is being done that way either. The trail to the top of the mound is barely passable because of encroaching blackberry bushes and nettles.

We used to encourage people to hike the forest trail one way, but that is not being maintained either.

This is a very vivid result of the horrendous cuts to the funding and thus staffing our our State Parks.

Geocache Description:

A nice easy scenic walk with forest, fields, remnants of homesteads, and military history. Only a few yards of the trail, on the "left" end of the viewpoint, are up a steepish trail. All this and a great view too! But wait! There's more! In the winter time the whole walk is like a different hike. The views are different, there is more light in the forest, etc.

ABSOLUTELY NO WALKING OFF TRAIL FROM THE BIG MEADOW OR UP TO THE VIEWPOINTThis is one of our favorite walks, and vistas. As the crow flies it is a little over 1/3 mile, by path it is maybe 3/4 of a mile at most depending on where you park.

This hike has forest, flowers, at least one eagle nest, remnants of old homesteads: an old fish pond near the big meadow, fruit trees, and wild roses; and a man-made place/viewpoint with a 360 degree view of meadows, forest, and ocean. You cannot get to the beach in a straight line. There is no trail through the marsh so don't even think about it.Be sure to use the trail, on the left end of the mound to the cache location and viewpoint. It is steepish. It is muddy after a rain, so be careful!

NO BUSHWHACKING IS REQUIRED - ZERO. DO NOT STEP ON THE FLOWERS. You do not need to walk off the trail - STAY ON THE TRAIL to find the cache.

After you find the cache, we hope you do some exploring to discover more of this park: go back the way you came, or back through the forest on a hiking trail. Portions of this forest trail are muddy at times.

While you are in the area, be sure to also search for "White Stuff"( GC1M57H) and "A pond to ponder" (GC2CY1R in the same trail system.

Park at or near N 48 18.503 W 122 42.780)when the park is open. In the winter, use alternative parking located 50 yards past the entrance to the park at a year round beach vista point(N 48 18.474 W 122 42.993). Another possible place for parking is at/near N 48 18.661 W 122 42.112. Accesses the loop trail around the immense meadow. The shortest part of the loop is to the right. Please stay on the trail instead of heading directly across the grass to the cache location and viewpoint. NO SHORTCUTS

We have replaced the original cache container with a much smaller container (now a micro).

Please supervise small children as there are steepish drop-offs nearby. Be sure to replace the cache exactly as you found it, and re-hide it well.

You need to bring your own pen..
