November 7 by G_Fours (203 found) Got a bit of a sinking feeling when my GPSr beeped to indicate I was 20 meters from the cache. It just didn't seem like I was 20 meters from the cache. Some one once said to me that half the fun of a Binthair cache was getting out there to see if you were right. After X meters of bushwhack and ALMOST jumping over a creek (boots and pant legs wet, feet thankfully dry) I definitely didn't want to be wrong. I obediently followed my arrow and sure enough came face to face with the cache. So I can now state with complete confidence that if I was ever attacked by a bear in the woods while caching, as long as I had an internet connection, I could find my way to safety. [view this log] | October 29 by Taoiseach (1451 found) At some point earlier in the Summer, Narcissa and I had a quasi-miserable dnf on this cacheWe erroneously took Bluelamb's advice (Hey, he's usually right...) as to where to approach from, and then were unsuccessful, despite being close. We had missed a few squares (By a few, I mean I could count on one hand the ones we missed), and had Narcissa not hurt her ankle, I think that there's a good chance we would have been able to find it on that first day. On the first day, as we sat on opposite banks of a creek, feebly trying to count squares, I think all of Bluelamb, Model12 and Pibelle received a call. Not a one of them were able to answer our call for help, and we were forced to leave, head hanging in shame. I doubt that we will ever forget that number... As luck would have it, a very observant Narcissa studied the map before we left today, and discovered that there is in fact a much better route in. Today, we took it, and as much as it was far better at this time of year, I wouldn't recommend it in the spring. Our way was a little bit more difficult of a bushwhack, but it was so significantly shorter that it didn't even matter - That being said, it was still a little bit wet. Once again, we found ourselves standing at the bank of the creek. We went down to the place where I had once crossed before (while Narcissa rested her sore ankle), and I again crossed with ease. Next, Narcissa's son came across with almost as much ease. Finally, it came to be Narcissa's turn. As she noted in her log, I'm a fair bit taller than she is, and as a result, me ability to jump a distance is somewhat better. Impressively, she was able to make it on to the floating log without getting wet, but it was in the time that she wanted me to try to pull her and the log closer to the other side. This didn't work, and she got a soaker... oh well... Once across, we made quick work of finding the cache. I maintain that had Narcissa have made it to the other side the first time around, we would have found it then... Oh well... On the way back, we found a much better crossing, and were soon on our way. Our bushwhack back was even easier, and then we enjoyed a nice stroll down the perfectly groomed trail back to the car. Found - 4:00 PM TNLN - TFTC! I write this as a member of the AFC, but at this time I still had one binthair left to go - Maximum Surprise!
[view this log] | October 29 by narcissa (1183 found) This cache has been on my closest-to-home page for YEARS, taunting me. Taoiseach and I made an attempt at it in the summer, but came up short due to an oversight in our square counting. Turns out we weren't very far away (less than 200m), but further search efforts at the time were derailed by a sore ankle, a water hazard, and fatigue from a long bushwhack through very tall weeds. This time around, we chose a different starting point and enjoyed a well-maintained trail for most of the way (instead of the long grass bushwhack). After a relatively short bushwhack, we found ourselves exactly where we were when we called off the search a few months before. With the help of an old log, Taoiseach gracefully leaped across the water obstacle. Then we carefully handed the wee cacher across. Being much shorter than Taoiseach, leaping across like a gazelle wasn't going to happen for me. I carefully stepped onto the log and tried to roll it a little closer to the opposite bank, then tried to get Taoiseach to pull me closer. That didn't work out so well - I ended up with wet feet, and nearly impaled in the thigh with a stick. But I was across! After another short bushwhack, we spotted the cache from several metres away. Yay! Signed the log, rested for a bit, and headed back. We found a slightly better place to cross the water on the way back, and though my feet got a little wetter, the bushwhack was a little shorter. Three Binthairs to go!

BINTHAIR #32 !!! I was only able to solve the math puzzle recently by receiving a small nudge as to how to research the information. I had been carefully counting squares and trusted my answer, the GZ looked plausible. I set out today at lunchtime to make the find, I knew the area from a previous visit and knew it would be a tough bushwhack. So I carefully planned some waypoints and a route in my gps and followed it, I never got wet but the dying grass was taller than me in many sections and I even swallowed some of the fluffy seed thingies that were flying off. In the end I found the cache before I reached my final waypoint, I did not even had to search because my route took me straight to it from the right angle. Having read the previous logs about a nice path I am curious to know where it is! Whoever is lined up for maintenance of this cache you have my admiration! I rescued two GCs that had been there for 5 months. TFTC

[view this log] | May 20 by portera (985 found) Binthair #25 for me!I had looked at this cache quite a while ago, and honestly had no idea how to proceed with it. I gave it another look on the weekend, and had a bit of a light-bulb moment. A Yes/No e-mail to an AFC member let me know that I was wrong. Darn! And I thought I was so smart. I resorted to the internet, and after much searching found the correct answer which was about 100m more optimal than my solution. Close but no cigar. One of my Team Vintage members had a photo of the sign, and I set to work figuring out how many squares there were, and it was quite a few! I thought I had the right number and had figured out the GZ, and then it came to me that I had missed 4. I re-calculated, and had an even more promising GZ. The outing was planned and I made sure that I figured out the best route to the cache, that didn't require hip-waders or a machete. The weather cleared up, we managed to get a team FTF on our way and had a very pleasant walk to the cache. If we had only resisted the urge to go straight for the cache for the last 80m or so... Took: Nothing Left: Ho-Hum Geocoin (I thought RitchieD would approve) Signed the log. Thanks for the cache!

[view this log] | December 13, 2008 by GeoPiel (1202 found) Beautiful crisp blue sky morning, with a fresh layer of deep snow. Strapped on the showshoes the first time this year, and started to plod in to where my newly calculated GZ was located. Some great views enroute, and managed to approach a pair of piliated woodpeckers busy making holes reasonabaly close. As I approached GZ, I started to question if I had found the optimal distance... hmm. Searched a bit, and bugger, nothing where I expected.. Squares. Maybe I did the squares wrong. Did some more field projections, and thought about checking a few more places out. Hmmm, what if I just resort to walking-the-line. Perplexed at what I should do next, I though the brute force method would be the most productive. Shortly thereafter, I stumbled into an area that looked like a great binthair hiding spot. Scanning, I had my eurika moment, and the cache was spotted. "OH BABY - YA" I screamed out to not-a-soul, and I headed in to grab the goods. Very winter friendly hide, and well secured. Signed logbook, took victory photos, and left mini toy simba flashlight. Thanks to all for keeping this cache active. Binthair #38.Starting to drive my family a bit batty with my constant doodles of circles, intersections, and theories of what the shortest path might be. So delighed to get this on completed! I have to say, if my life was dependent on finding the optimal route out of the woods after a bear attack, you would be looking for my skeleton!
[view this log] | November 16, 2008 by SigsPig (1339 found) Light snow, overcast & -1ºC without windchill. After work today, took a quick look & said yes, the weather isn't that bad. Quick call to one of my Binthair partners only to find out that I was going solo. Thankfully my partner has a square calculating trick that came in handy again My darn boots were soaked by the time I was 200m into my trek but being slightly stubborn, carried on. Never did see a makeshift bridge but didn't need one on the route I picked. Was starting to wonder how close to the neighboring property I was getting as I know they don't like trespassing. Once off the path, it was a relatively short bushwack. T - nothing, L - pin Thanks for the hike

| November 8, 2008 by GeoPiel (1202 found) No such luck today.... though I had things worked out well enough to go by and grab a find. Approach looked good, and did not need to get wet when I got close to my derived GZ.... my senses tingled, as this looked like great Binthair hiding area - it even looked like the pictures! Alas, no such luck, after 30 minutes of searching in the area. Going to head back home, re-think this cache: recalculate the squares, and take another pass at this one.
[view this log] | November 1, 2008 by Pibelle (5158 found) Last week, we went prepared with a formula in hand to calculate the number of squares, but once we arrived at ground zero we were thrown for a loop. My formula wasn't going to help us, so we parked the car and started counting squares. We both came up with the same numbers, so off we sent to try and find the cache. After 20 minutes of searching in pretty easy terrain, we didn't come up with the cache. I knew I had the correct solution for distance, so back to the board for more square counting. Quickly figured out where we went wrong last time and came up with a new number. After confirmation that the number I came up with was very close, we went out with renewed confidence. Most of the walk, which was along a nice trail, was very enjoyable. The bushwalk was a little tough, but we eventually made it to ground zero. Once there, we found the cache within a couple minutes. Thanks for the cache! Pibelle

| October 19, 2008 by The Fossils (1857 found) A bit of an adventure for this one. It would have been a lot easier if we had done the projection from the correct coordinates, so that added about 500 or 600m extra bushwhacking. Ended up building a little footbridge over the creek, which put us on the wrong side. More bushwhacking. Etc... It was really a great relief to find the cache (8/8 Binthairs today). [view this log] | September 6, 2008 by GreyingJay (1307 found) While out caching with Esiban, kashtin, opichi, rossmtbiker and shadow, we got completely soaking wet doing some other caches in the area so we figured we may as well grab this one as well. I'd taken a good look at the puzzle and admit that I too used a little bit of web searching to help with clues to the solution. The math was fairly straightforward in the end, but getting there in this weather proved to be a real chore! When we finally found the container, I took nothing, but left a DVD movie. Thanks!

[view this log] | July 30, 2008 by npsh (636 found) I had this one solved, but reading the logs was a bit daunting. Since I was alone and it was raining I figured I'd give it a shot. I wouldn't bring anyone I cared about here. It sucked, but I was in and out in 45 minutes, soaked to the bone. Surprisingly, there were really no bugs until the final when I stopped. I left a paramedic patch and diabeetus travel bug in keeping with the life saver theme.

[view this log] | July 10, 2008 by Garmin Gal (673 found) Wow - what a journey to this cache. I was reminded of the value in patience and persistence. After we DNFed on Saturday, I kicked my research activity into overtime, resorting to questioning strangers on the bus if they had ever heard of a puzzle like this one. I spent much "borrowed" time googling for some kind of hint in the right direction... and it paid off! In a funny twist of fate, rossmtbiker stumbled across the same solution on the same day - some things are just meant to be, I guess. Tip of the hat to Fraggleclone for his very close solution. It was almost anti-climactic to find this cache - though it was great fun in the company of ottawabirdbrain (and wife - apparently an accomplished puzzle-solver herself), Esiban, kashtin13031, rossmtbiker and Tanglebones. I'm sure I will miss this cache...what else will keep me awake at night now? TNLN TFTC #277 (binthair #24)[This entry was edited by Garmin Gal on Friday, July 11, 2008 at 8:10:56 PM.]
[view this log] | July 10, 2008 by Tanglebones (551 found) A week ago, with confidence high, we went out into the bush to bag a binthair. Without resorting to George Bush's "The Google" to solve this one, I was very confident about the distance, not seeing any possible way to get a more optimal solution. When we logged DNF's after several hours bushwhacking, though, I was disheartened and (unfairly) felt it must be the bearing that was out of whack. Bad old bearing! It turns out the calculated bearing was absolutely spot on - and so was the distance. Almost. The slightest variation in an otherwise accurate solution meant we were looking 150m away from the actual location, even though the theory was almost perfect. Almost, but not quite - and a valuable lesson in optimal path mathematics. It is indeed sweet to have this cache in the rear view mirror - primarily because it was taking over more and more synapses of my brain as day after frustrating day passed. Bad old binthair. Gratz on 100th multi, Esiban. Many more of them. T: Diabetes TB L: Pablo the Spider TB TFTC. - TB
[view this log] | July 10, 2008 by rossmtbiker (1423 found) The first of three cache finds this evening. Found it with Ottawabirdbrain (and wife), Tanglebones, Esiban, Kashtin, GiGi, and my trusty dog Samwise. On Saturday the PFSMCC headed out very optimistic but came up short. This week, with a bit more fevered search on the internet, three of us came up with the solution to the distance independently. I was a little anxious about our square count, especially having read the logs about "missing squares" and "what constitutes a square", but I'm happy to report that my square count was correct all along, nothing tricky there. We selected a better parking spot, and although the hike was long and the weeds were tall and thick, our feet stayed dry. When we arrived at GZ, we all waited for Esiban to find the cache as it was her 100th multi. I think we all spotted it before her, but walked around acting nonchalant until she spotted it and logged us in. We then celebrated with ginger ale, coke, chocolate chip cookies, and mini-doughnuts (bet you can't eat just one). Sam even grabbed a cookie after Kashtin left them within his reach. This was a very frustrating cache to solve, but we did have a lot of fun getting it tonight. T-Jeep TB Thanks!p.s. I forgot to mention, Tanglebones was soooo close with his derived solution, that he reached on his own. I am amazed by that man's puzzle skills.

The distance was right where ross's solution predicted (and tanglebones had done a much better first half of the path than I before we got agreed on this other solution). Congrats to esiban on 100 multis. Left a geonickel.
[view this log] | July 10, 2008 by Esiban (1635 found) After striking out on Sat., we re-worked our math and came back ready for bear, so to speak. There is a definite geo-trail along there now as rossmtbiker, Tanglebones, Garmin Gal, ottawabirdbrain, Mrs. ottawabirdbrain, Kashtin_13031, and myself trekked in to find this one. We were so close on Sat., we were so close! Armed with our new calculations, we found it rather quickly this evening. And what a good feeling too as this was my 100th multi-cache found! After a celebration with bubbly, cookies, mini donuts and licorice, we headed back out again.Exchanged TBs. TFTC
[view this log] | July 8, 2008 by GPComd (1384 found) I thought I had this one figured out, But obviously not. Approaching from the northeast from another cache is not a good idea. Nope, not at all. It's 350m of 'worse than aldernate route, the kind you find at 0300 in Highview Tower here in Petawawa' brush and weeds and deadfall. Then you have to go back, because that's where you parked. Next time, I'll come in the other way.I know the puzzle distance is good, it has to be the squares. I got to a plausible GZ, but absolutely no geotrails around it in the 5-6 foot high grass. With a find a couple of days ago, there'd be something. I did my looking schtick anyways, but came up with bupkiss. I tried to take an easier route out, but it made no difference. I was done like dinner when I finally got back onto the trail. Not a good batting average for Binthairs today, only managed to complete 2 of them. I think we counted the number of squares correctly, but my solution wasn't optimal as Tanglebones derived one that was about 200m closer than mine. We aren't certain we have the correct optimal path as none of us found it on the internet. We even tried walking the line a bit, all to no avail. | March 25, 2008 by pilgrimofthemind (635 found) Bibbits and I had been discussing this cache a fair bit as of late but like everyone else it took a while for the hiding squares to reveal themselves. We even walked a bearing line one night which turned out to be WAY off. It was still a good adventure though! After a few pints at the Meet and Eat tonight though, some sketches on some graph paper, and some numbers flying around, we had a couple of new spots to check we were ready to go. Bibbits and I headed out after the event, threw a beer into our pack and headed off on a nice night. Too bad it was cloudy as there was supposed to be a full moon. The flight path right over head though provided much to watch in the sky though. Anyway, we located the cache and celebrated with some photos and the pint. Beautiful area, hardly any bushwack at all if you take the right path. It was a great night to grab it. TNLNSL! TFTH!

Congratulations to the first few to find this cache; I suspect it was a lot harder then now. There are so many clues in the logs and pictures that I knew what do to correctly. Do your homework for this one. Yesterday, I headed out with what I thought was the correct coordinates. A long easy hike took me to an area that I knew I was off but close. If it wasn't -16 C with a wind chill and starting to get dark, I would have walked-the-line (arc). I walked back to the car thinking about squares. Last night I found some more hiding squares and came with new coordinates. With a forecast for heavy snow today, I thought either I get this morning or not 'till spring. So off we went, and this time success. I found the cache within about 10 seconds of GZ. Coordinates were bang on. TFTC L: My new Alberta Geocion T: Nothing but snow in my boots and gloves.

We encountered almost every type of terrain accompanied with a steady drizzle. The big bonus was NO BUGS!!!!! We were soon fairly wet from the precipitation (not from falling into a water and mud filled ditch). We bushwacked past two of the potential GZ's and as we approached the 3rd, I had that Binthair tingle. It just felt right for a cache location. And there it was!. Celebration ensued. As we were logging the cache, jman007 announced that to add to the challenge of this mornings hike, he no longer had his Blackberry attached to his hip. We get to bushwack back along our doglegged track (instead of following the nice path we just located) to try to find a needle in a haystack with no known wp! Every seen how a person reacts when they don't have their Crackberry? Fortunatly, I had a cellphone with me and after calling, listening, walking 50 meters, and repeating this exercise 5 times, he was reaquainted with his beloved Blackberry. We then returned to the path and had an ejoyable relaxed (non bushwacking) walk back to the vehicles. TN L lock SL TFTH

[view this log] | July 29, 2007 by wareed (1065 found) 1600h. FINALLY! Without question, this cache has been my toughest binthair cache. Wayfinder Zukon and I have a common associate we sometimes call upon when we get stumped on puzzle caches. I spurned our associate's assistance on my first three outings. After three attempts with no luck, I relented and our associate helped complete the puzzle. I've learned more than I ever wanted to know about how to count squares. And when binthair says, "non-intuitive" he means it! (And that's why one has an associate to call upon under these circumstances.) Armed with what I was sure were the correct coordinates today, Binrat and I returned. What a bushwhack to reach this cache. Both Binrat and I want to know how the devil Search 4 reached this cache and got back to his vehicle in 30 minutes. We searched and searched but couldn't find any sign of the helipad he must have used to do so. ;-) Only because of wandering aimlessly trying to avoid the long weeds did we stumble upon the cache quite a few metres from the computed coordinates ... and before we even reached GZ. After an hour's search, I gave up. I took another view on square count and today I brought Binrat along for good luck ;-) We headed off for my new projection but gave up before getting to GZ: the underbrush was just too dense and too wet to be a legitimate contender. We returned to my search area of last week. No luck today. Driving home, I had another idea of what constitutes a square. I'll return again when I'm more confident that I'll be in the correct search area. Or, failing that, I'll walk the line! [This entry was edited by wareed on Sunday, July 29, 2007 at 3:45:51 PM.]
[view this log] | July 25, 2007 by Due-North (386 found) This one had been sitting on my 'go grab it' list for way too long, and after scooping 2 Binthairs I thought it was going to be quick to get a Binthair hat-trick today. Boy was I wrong. Although my coordinates turned out to be fairly close, the route I took to get there was anything but! It seems that the recent rain increased water levels in the area, which led to way too much backtracking and bushwacking through some very tough shrubs. I think that Alder-nate Route was a cake-walk compared to my path! Deerflies and mosquitoes, along with 30+ degree heat didn't improve the overall experience. Finally reaching the car, my clothes were completely soaked with sweat, blood, and tears of joy that I'm not heading back in there anytime soon! I'm glad this was the final cache of my Binthair hat-trick today, because I don't think I would have tackled anything else after this one. Took nothing, left Jeep TB.
[view this log] | July 12, 2007 by kcote (1422 found) #341 It took us 4 days of searching the trails to find the cache. We were fairly sure that we had the distance calculated correctly but every time we counted the squares we ended up with a different result. All told we parked in 4 different places, walked nice and not-so-nice trails, bushwacked through heavy bush, whacked our way through patches of wet ferns, and other patches of stinging nettles, crossed one beaver dam, stepped across a stream or two, got rained on, and finally found the cache. We certainly got our exercise on this one! T - a geocoin L - a Twoonie Thanks for the challenge! Another Binthair done!

| May 11, 2007 by Search 4 (2261 found) We started working on this one a while ago by visiting the sign, quickly counting the squares and then surfing the internet to find help with the optimal path. I used to think that the Geocaching forums could get a bit nerdy but then I started reading the discussion boards for people that do geometry problems for fun! Anyway, I went out yesterday to find the cache and ended up spending 2 hours fighting the bushes and trees. I came home defeated and then decided to start all over again. I was mad at myself when I realized that the square count was wrong. That was supposed to be the easy part! Anyway, my time spent in the area yesterday can be viewed as an area recce as I was able to find the cache today in 30 minutes (including the bike ride from and back to the truck). Geocaching is a lot easier when you look in the right spot. Took nothing, left a Geocoin and a really good recipe for fudge that I got from a Bar2Bar cache.
[view this log] | May 8, 2007 by Bicycleman (679 found) I didn't see a bear but I did see a deer before he saw me. This is definitely not a drive-by cache although in the end I could have done a large chunk of it on the bike. I was so thankful that the bugs have not fully arrived.Yes I was surprised that I found it as the solution is not one that most people have ever really thought about or experienced. I applaud NeoDorset for finding it by walking the line. I don't have the confidence that I could walk the line to the tolerance needed to find the cache. And where do you stop if you don't find it? All in all a very positive learning experience. Took a set of screwdriver bits, left a roll of electrical tape.
[view this log] | April 21, 2007 by NeoDorset (1500 found) I have to admit to never finding a solution to the puzzle for the distance. The bearing was easy enough, and I set out today to "walk the line" (in one way or another) and ended up walking to the cache quite easily (with a little help from an aerial view of the area). I expected much more trouble from all the water hazards in the area, but only had to cross one small one on my route, which didn't even get my boots wet! Took some stickers and left a new HotWheels "Double Vision" (bizarre car). Also replaced the ziplocs, which had holes in them, although the cache was nice and dry inside.
[view this log] | April 17, 2007 by model12 (7203 found) 10:53amDid the calculations after gathering the information needed last week. A confirmation that I was in the right area caused some more calculating. Then this morning I decided to try a route I had previously been on. Of course I ended up on the wrong side of the very wide creek! But there is a beaver dam *almost* all the way across it, and I tried my luck today. Everything got across dry with the exception of my right leg, which decided all on its own to go swimming up to the knee... After 5 minutes of dumping water out of the boot, and re-dreeing, I headed off the last 100 metres following a handy benchrail. Another creek! This one was much narrower, and it too had a handy dam across it, so no problem here. The cache was in hand a few minutes later as I walked my projected line. | April 6, 2007 by penguins lament (3108 found) We'd already had a cold but eventful morning of geocaching with our milestone 800 find and 2 binthairs under our belt, but Rockhopper really wanted a Binthair hat trick for the day and we'd calculated the coordinates for this one a couple of days ago. Now normally at this point Adelie would be giving Rockhopper "the look"... Little Blue was cold, hungry and tired and these Binthairs aren't very kid friendly. It was past noon already and soon it would be naptime. But on Thursday Rockhopper had sent a link to Adelie... a link to Kirok's Binthair Challenge site. ARGGH! [At this point a little message to Kirok: Curses on you from Adelie... many thanks from Rockhopper! *grin*] Yes, the website did stir some competitive feelings that were very much conflicting with the motherly protectiveness feelings... so after a bit of hmmming and hawing it was decided that a brief lunch break at Kelsey's would warm us and feed us, and hopefully Little Blue would then be ready for another treasure hunt... or at least a nap in the back carrier.Bellies filled and toes warmed we were on our way again. Unfortunately we'd left the printouts with the logs in the car but Adelie was fairly certain that there was mention of a small path that if not found would necessitate one whopping bushwhack. We discovered several things: that Adelie will always take a path, even if it means a longer walk, and Rockhopper will always take the direct route, even if it means dense undergrowth and creeks galore. We also discovered that Little Blue has acquired an overnight ability for bushwhacking... at 2 years old, she now instinctively covers her eyes and lowers her head into the back carrier whenever the brush gets really dense. After several failed attempts Adelie's "look" appeared again and we went back to a tiny footpath we'd passed by earlier... and after another quick "shortcut" attempt by Rockhopper before being herded back onto the path, we finally got to 'ground zero'. This is where the doubts set in... cause the cache was nowhere to be found. It was so frustrating cause everything fit too well to be wrong. We recounted squares and came up with the same answer. Rockhopper started searching trees and crossing creeks desperately while Adelie tried to keep Little Blue entertained. (Did I mention it was cold?!) Finally, Adelie decided it was time to give up the hat trick and head home to recheck our calculations. So we slowly started heading out and then Rockhopper had a hunch and asked for 5 more minutes... and before the 5 minutes was up Rockhopper was hopping out of the bushes with the cache in hand. Amidst praises of being such a 'super trooper', Little Blue enjoyed getting 2 new treasures and the rest of the way back to the car was accompanied with squeals of "I'm SUPER!" ("yes, you're super..."). Little Blue's last words tonight as she went to bed were "Bushwhack. Super." :) Took: aquarium and ball Left: connect 4 game and transformer TFTC and thanks for the challenge! I found it with g0blin over lunch hour. With the help of g0blin and GOOGLE, I was *finally* able to get the proper optimal path for the problem. I don't think I would have *ever* found that solution. First we tried to bushwhack to the cache. That proved to be a very bad idea. We eventually hit an impassible obstacle and each ended up with a soaker to the knee. We gave up and were bushwhacking bad to the car when we stumbled onto another path. We figured we had spent enough time on this that might as well give it a try. The path led almost directly to the final cache location! I'm happy to finally get this one off my To Do list. [view this log] | September 16, 2006 by Kirok (1357 found) #319 - Wow. It's nice to finally get this one off my list. Like some others, I found the solution to the puzzle some time ago using a few creative web searches. After snapping a pic of the sign back in early spring, I sat down and worked out a set of plausible coordinates and added them to my todo list. A few weeks ago when I kicked into binthair overdrive, I headed down a nice easy trail to bag it. Too easy in fact. My final coordinates were clearly wrong, as I didn't find a container and the surroundings didn't match any other log photos I remembered. Despite having already solved a squares counting puzzle, I had missed some this time around. With much better coordinates in hand, I set out again. Some nasty bushwhacking lead me to the shores of a creek I dared not traverse, so I bailed. While I had read that many others had to cross a few water hazzards, the 1.5 terrain rating on the cache page lead me to believe that binthair had cleaverly hidden it along a nice trail that was simply not obvious. So, for the past week and a half, I've walked just about EVERY trail in that blasted forest (and should have been collecting tags for DE's tic-tac cache, but alas) trying to find the 1.5 terrain rated trail. I failed. Today, I threw caution to the wind and simply went for it down the trail with the smallest water hazzard to the cache. Only four steps of shin high water and 100 meters of real bushwhacking and I had it! The 1.5 terrain must be in winter only. With plenty of water and scratches to show for my success, I sat down in the home theatre with 3 fingers of a fine port and savoured my victory while watching a flick. | July 5, 2006 by dedale (1706 found) At first I thought I had the « optimal solution » involving a multi-legs search pattern. Mathematically it was correct but not geometrically, PMassi showed me his, definitely much better (should have read Binthair`s hints). He also told me he did not find the container… no way I going there if we are not certain of the solution. But PMassi was very close, looking at his geometry … what if … did the mathematics to find the “best” solution and Eureka!!! I love these kinds of puzzles! Thanks Binthair!!
[view this log] | July 5, 2006 by pmassi (1183 found) I did an attempt two years ago (I guess I was afraid to try it again). Earlier this year, I talked to dedale about this cache so he could also solve it and team up for the leg part. One day, he tells me he has the solution, so I show him my drawing... only to learn he didn't have the optimal algorithm! Doh! I just assumed he had the good one right away! We didn't have any time to go finish it and postponned until we both had some spare time (that was 4 or 5 months ago!) Then, a few weeks ago, he wrote me a short email saying he had an even better solution... Darn! That's why I couldn't find it on my first attempt... And by not a neglegible distance, much more than the GPS accuracy. Finally went on the field today to validate the coords, and indeed they were good this time. I found the container only 2m from them. Lots of flies on the first portion of the walk, lots of mosquitoes when loging. And it was a MAJOR bushwalk for the last hundred meters. The container in is excellent condition, log book is half full (or empty for the pessimists!), still has room for a few years. Glad I finally finished this cache, it has been on the top of my TODO list for way too long. pmassi & dedale

Yes! Again, I thought this one would be way harder than what I encountered on the terrain. My feet were all wet (my Gore-Tex boots don't even have 6 months! Don't buy this brand anymore...), so I thought I could go in water if need be... But I finally managed to find my way without putting my knees in water! | November 12, 2005 by m&mm (184 found) Going for cache 4/4 today. Mudlark's geo-mob was stumped by this one. We found the sign relatively quickly, but used one of the given, non-optimal ways to calculate it. Are count of squares was also woefully low. Our first attempt brought us to the middle of a fragrant swamp. Our next attempt was next to someone's house on the highway (didn't spend too much time on this one). At this point the mob had to disband due to other non-caching engagements. Three of us continued on with a final idea, which turned out to be in a farmer's field (drat!). Looking at the picture of the sign, I believe I now have the proper number of squares (including a tricky one). Couple this with another fact of the puzzle, and there's only 1 possiblity left (with the help of google earth), which will be done another time (as all that bushwacking today has left us a little sore). Look forward to testing my theories on this one.M

Can a square by part of another Square? Can squares join to make more squares? Squares, squares, everywhere a square. Can a square be part of more than one combination square? Does size really make a difference? What exactly is D, and isn't Pie round? not Squared? The only thing we got right on this one, was apparently picking the worst optimal trail (twice) which takes you into intense bush for the fun of it. It will have to wait another day. | November 22, 2003 by Roswell.fr (581 found) A long long time ago, in spring, I tried to find this cache with the wrong answer to the puzzle. Obviously, I didn't find it and came back home very wet and dirty. Very recently, I sent an email to Binthair to check my answer, and decided to give it another try. I found a better solution one night but still not the optimal one. I tried again, worked on 2 functions, tried to find their minimum and finally found the optimal path. That was not easy and required good old trigonometry. The walk to the cache was very pleasant; I had to cross 3 streams, but would have avoided 2 of them if I had chosen a better entry point. I'm not sure the remaining one was avoidable. My rate for the terrain would be 2 or 2.5. When I was about 100m from my goal, I started to see an isolated group of trees and was more confident in my coordinates. The cache container was easy to find, but not the goodies . To tell you everything, I found the lid first, on the floor, then the container, in its nest, full of ice and wooden sticks. Then, I found a couple of goodies, zip-lock bags and the log book in the surrounding bushes. Most of these things were chewed, as you can imagine. I put them back in the container, and added a booklet and a pencil of mine to replace the wet and dirty log book. I had no zip-lock bags with me, so cache maintenance is required and urgent. The goodies I found are: a geocaching compass, a toy car, a trumpet and a stapler. The title of the log book was "Benches & Bearings". I wonder how it flyed that far. It was a very entertaining cache, with a very mathematical puzzle, nice walk and good hiding place. I recommend it. It may be wise to check your answer to the puzzle with Binthair before trying to find the cache. Thanks Binthair!

Hey! What could be more fitting than pepperway being the first to this cache and finding his/their own bell....LOL!Congratulations to team pepperway on solving a rather difficult puzzle and getting there first! I know for sure that snowshoes were a good idea today! Don't worry about anybody following the tracks...it's bound to snow a lot before anyone else solves this puzzle cache. Cheers! binthair [last edit: 3/11/2003 7:24:58 PM PST]
[view this log] | March 11, 2003 by pepperway (371 found) We have not had a first find on a binthair cache in a long time. Well I worked the math, came to a few false conclusions but eventually found the cache. We picked up the bell. It was only fitting that we find this bell on one occasion. Kim signed the log while a trade was made, whistle for compass, I think. Great cache puzzle and location. Thanks binthair. Snowshoes were a must on this one. There are tracks to follow for the next visitor.[last edit: 4/15/2003 7:58:18 PM PST]

An additional hint and a picture have been added to give an idea of some possible strategies that could be followed, but are non-optimal. Your task is to find the OPTIMAL strategy.Cheers! binthair [last edit: 3/1/2003 7:28:08 AM PST]

Thanks to a suggestion by Zartimus, I have added a link on the cache page to a National Capital Commission pamphlet entitled The Black Bear and You. It's a highly recommended read before heading out into the woods.Cheers! binthair

Heh,heh! I see that Zartimus is up to date on the latest caching apparel! I thought Troy Hurtubise was another of your pseudonyms, Zartimus!!!...LOL! I saw Project Grizzly on TV several years ago. It's hilarious!! I believe you can rent it on VHS. If you look closely at the credits, you may be able to see Zartimus's real name mentioned!!! Cheers! binthair
