Geocache Description:

Come join us in Northern Virginia for this month's meeting! Yes, that's right in Virginia at Burke Lake Park.

WHEN: 3/15/2003 at 11:00am

WHO: All interested Geocachers Are invited!

WHERE: Burke Lake Park. Following are two different links with information about Burke Lake Park:
(visit link) (visit link)

FOOD: Pot luck, please post if you plan on bringing anything to share. Actually, please post if plan on attending, so people planning on bringing stuff to share know how much to bring.

COORDINATES: The listed coordinates are for one of the Picnic Pavilions, at this time of year you cannot make reservations, and they are available on a first come first serve basis. I plan to get there early to stake a claim, but if it is taken here are alternate coordinates to a second pavilion: N38 45.461 W77 18.002.

WHAT: There will be a brief meeting of the Maryland Geocaching Society.

Following the meeting will be the massive group hunt for the original Burke Lake Park Cache: (visit link) Every team with a GPS will pick a spot, and we will start hunting at the same time til we find it. THe team that finds it first will get a big "Huzzah" from the rest of us. This cache was archived over a year ago, but was recently found by bigcall. It is my understanding, bigcall plans to adopt this cache shortly after the meeting.

After signing the logbook at the Burke Lake Park cache, please pair off into groups of 2 or more. I (JoeCthulhu) will distribute the coordinates and descriptions of the caches hidden in Burke Lake Park for the days event, and will ask your group to either take a clock-wise or counter clock-wise path around the lake. Groups of cachers will be released approximately 5 minutes apart in alternating directions. This lag is to allow all of cachers to have the best experience possible, due to the linear nature of the placement of the caches around the lake. If you plan on only doing the caches in the immediate vicinity of the pavilion, please wait until after all of the cachers who are planning on making the circuit around the lake have received the cache descriptions.

Approximately 7 caches will be hidden around the entire circumference of the lake. Most of the caches will be hidden in reasonable proximity to the main trail that circles the lake. Those that aren’t, if any, will be identified. Simply walking the circuit completely around the lake takes about 2 hours.

Caches will be posted on the main Geocaching web-site later that day, unless bigcall, and I are really tired.

On the day of the event I will post my cell phone number on this page so anyone who needs to get a hold of me on that day for any reason can.

If you can’t come until later, don’t worry. After all of the cachers who show up on time have left on the hunt. I’ll be placing extra copies of the cache descriptions under the windshield of my Pontiac Aztec close to the pavilion. Please come and join the fun even if you have to come late.

Right now there is only one active cache in Burke Lake Park, bigcall’s "On the (not so) beaten track.” This cache is way far off of the trail that circles the lake. I don’t recommend attempting it during this event for that reason.
I you have any questions, please contact me through my profile e-mail address.

I hope to see all the Marylanders Washingtonians and NoVAites there, and I hope you all have fun.

Update (3/12/2003):

I've hidden 5 caches for the event, and bigcall is still planning on hiding 2 or 3. Two of the caches have themes.

Luck O' the Irish: In honor of St. Patrick's Day I have hidden a cache where all of the items are green or irish related.

Gamer's Stash: This cache is loaded with cards from Pokeman, Harry Potter, Doomtown, and Vampyre collectable card games, MageKnight and HeroClix miniatures, DiskWars game pieces, and lots of Polyhedron dice.

Looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones.
