Good Job and Thank you!

To all who attempt this cache, please insure you read the posted notes and understand the star rating. Please do not try any short cuts and be prepared as you would for any "Back Country" cache.

Eagle Anvil

"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn."

John Muir

This cache is located in Coldwater Canyon from the Lytle Creek area. Access to it is by Forest Road 3N06A. This road does not seem to show up on over the counter TOPO maps, but does on Google Earth. A waypoint will be included for trail access. Drive the road to the waypoint for parking. Park and hike aproximately one mile to the cache. There is no trail for most of the distance and "trail blazing" at steep angles with loose gound is required.

The following is required to get to the cache:
  • 4WD with good clearance
  • Have experience with a 4WD
  • Forest Adventure Pass
  • Nice weather. Do not attempt during periods of rain or while snowed in.

You must be very careful driving on this road and trust your experience. If in doubt just park and hike the extra distance to the cache. It's much better to be cautious than to get stuck, or ruin your vehicle, and have to hike into Lytle Creek looking for help.

You will notice that it seems that the road continues on past the parking waypoint. It is destroyed, so don't try it. The hike will go up one switch back and then the trail appears to end from a rock slide. From there locate the tree straight ahead and you will notice a foot trail going beside it. As of now the slight foot trail is there from hunters and animals and will lead you most of the way to the cache. This foot trail will probably be erased after a good rain. Try to stay at the same altitude and follow your GPSr to the cache.

The cache is located just up the hill from the main focus of this cache. It is placed up there to protect it during rain and after the snow melt. A spoiler picture will be included to insure it is found. After all, it's not just about the cache, or else you wouldn't be considering this one.

This is a cammoed ammo container

The original cache contents include:

Log Book with pen/pencil, 1 can/bottle opener, emergency poncho, disposable hand warmer, 4 eye glass/GPSr lense cleaning tissues, and 2 packs of 4 each AA batteries.

All along Road 3N06A are "unimproved" campgrounds that are spacious and have fire rings. These are really nice campgrounds and you could consider making an overnighter out of this. If so, please stop by the Lytle Creek Ranger Station to grab a fire permit and Forest Adventure Pass.
