Het is 1915 en de oorlog in
Europa is in volle gang. Rose Sayer (Katharine Hepburn) is een
missionaris, samen met haar broer dominee Samuel (Robert Morley),
in een klein dorpje in Oostelijk Afrika. Als de Duitse troepen het
dorp binnenvallen sterft Sayer. Charlie Allnut (Humphrey Bogart) is
de beruchte Canadese kapitein van een stoomboot die proviand
vervoert. Met tegenzin helpt hij haar vluchten.
