How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

This log-only cache is off the Rock Climbers Loop Trail, a 1.2 mile trail that loops around the NW wall of Kwaay Paay Mtn above the Father Junipero Serra Trail (now a one-way paved road way.)

Cache is almost directly over the trailhead, 400 feet up and about a .35 mile hike; it's above and ESE of the "Thumb", a rock formation named so by the climbers. The altitude on my GPS showed 700 feet.

However, there is some bushwhacking off the trail the last 30 feet or so, and at an angle. Shorts should be OK but bring a good pair of hiking shoes and a walking stick. And be careful walking on dry grass as it gets slippery when it's dry.

To get to Middle-earth from here, continue up in an eastern direction about 30 yards, then head straight up.

Take extra caution in the summer months; there are lots of hiding places for snakes here.

Note restricted hours: Father Junipero Serra Trail closes at 5p in fall/winter, and at 7p in spring/summer.
