Back in June of 1838, this area was being logged by a six man
hardworking crew. Two men were working the large six foot crosscut
saw, two were hacking with Double Bit axes and two were working the
logs to the pull wagon with Logger Cant Hooks, like they always do.
When, all of a sudden, three of the men were tangled up in vines
and being dragged down the hill towards the nearby swamp. The
forest had seemed to come to life and moving in around them. The
vines were moving around the men like giant snakes around a new
found prey! The men were screaming with fright, yelling ....^1 and
...... ^1... vines and limbs everywhere! The men with the axes
chopped into the vines and freed up one of the men that was
entangled. They could not reach the other two men that were being
dragged at great speed down the hill. The four remaining men ran to
the base camp about a mile away to get help and more Broad
axes.
When the search party returned, there were no remains found of the
missing two loggers,^2 only wide trails down into the swamp pond.
The remaining men talked of VineMen Monsters and never returned
back to work. They packed up their belongings and moved out of camp
that night.^3 They didn't even collect their pay for that week. ^4
It is said that their screams are still heard during foggy days and
nights on this part of the trail! Also, in 1971 the park entrance
toll boths were moved from this area further into the park to cut
down the number of false police calls^5 because of screams for help
heard in this area.^6
Have fun out here but be careful if the vines seem to be moving or
growing. Do Not step on any vines! That would be bad and is against
park policy.
