(SPOILERS FOR THE KINGDOM HEARTS GAME SERIES MAY FOLLOW)
Riku is one of Sora's two best childhood friends. Although Terra passed on the ability to wield the keyblade to Riku, Riku was not chosen by the keyblade in Kingdom Hearts. Riku was too eager to travel to other worlds and "accepted" an opportunity to use darkness to do so. However, the rest of the series has been a journey of redemption for him, and he eventually became a Keyblade Wielder anyway.
