the bonfire!!
**Anyone using a radio, use FRS channel
2, code 2.**
Here's what it's all
about...
Cache your way to Assateague on June 17th and join us for the
3rd annual beachfront bonfire! Activites start at 6ish and will
last until the big pony invasion which usually occurs around 1:30
am. This is an event to get together, kick back, relax and share
caching experiences with other cachers.
FOOD!!!
Everyone brings whatever meat they want to cook over the fire. Feel
free to be creative with this...in past years, we've had everything
from hotdogs, to kilbasa, to steak and even shrimp!
Everyone is also to bring whatever they wish to drink. Alcohol
is allowed, see the "guidelines" below...and be sure to snag one of
Krazy Trollz' jello shooters...i don't think we ever figured out
how may different rums were in them!
Lastly...everyone is also asked to bring a potluck to share with
everyone else. If you are travelling for the weekend to join us,
you will be happy to know there is a supermarket down the road to
help you with your potluck. If you know ahead of time what you are
bringing, send me an email so I can list your contribution on the
page.
Alcohol...
This event is BYOB!!!
Alcohol is permitted by the park service, as long as you follow
the guidelines:
- Only the persons over the age of 21 are permitted to possess
any form of alcoholic beverage, including beers & wines.
- All persons consuming alochol must carry and be able to present
proper legal proof of age.
- Individuals may not consume alcohol to the degree where they
may harm themselves, other people or property.
Stuff to do on Assateague
We're on the beach! There is enough room to play any beach
oriented sports such as volleyball or horseshoes. So, if you want
to check out the athletic savvy of your fellow cachers, bring along
your net and ball and we'll set up a game. Anyone with DeskJocky on
their volleyball team automatically loses 10 points due to his
height advantage!
Got wheels? Check out the trails for & the beaches reserved
for 4 wheeling.
If you wish to spend the day on the beach, there are outdoor
rinse off showers & indoor changing stalls near the bonfire
area.
This event is on an ISLAND! There is
plenty of water here, so bring along your canoe or kayak and explore
the back bays. There are also 3 nearby
caches in which you can utilize the use of your boat to
obtain.
Surf fishing is permitted in non
designated surfing areas and on non guarded beaches. There is a
nearby bait shop to pick up some mullet.
Camping
UPDATE! Cachers were running into some confusion about camping.
THe state park and the national park are 2 different parks, they
don't share info with one another. If you call the state park and
mention my event, they will have no idea what you're talking about
because its in the national park. I have contacted the state park
camping reservation company, so that they are aware of this event,
to make things less confusing. Sorry about the confusion!
Campgrounds are filling up quick due to
tourism of the area. If you can't get a spot on Assateague, you can
try one of these campgrounds:
Coming from out of town? There is a complete campground right on
the National Park premisis. Check it out or give them a call at
410-641-3030 for more details. Please
don’t depend on camping next to the cookout fire, the Park staff
will not let you have a pajama party after the cookout. Please be
aware that there are a variety of campsites through the National
Park service, some of which are quite rustic with
no available water, make sure you know what you are reserving in
full detail.
There is also the Assateague Island State Park Camping area
which is different from the National Park camping areas. The state
park sites are more expensive, but do provide more facilities.
Dogs, cats and especially pteradactyls are prohibited in the State
park. Reservations are recommended and be made at
410-641-2120. Camping on this
island is rough, there are no trees for shelter from sun and
wind, and the bugs are bad, make sure you are well prepared.
The NPS and the state parks at Assateague
will not share info as to where anyone is camping, or where
any sites are located for people that have made reservations
for camping for this event. Therefore, if there is a group of
cachers intending to camp, you will need to email me your
campsite #, so I can provide info on the page for everyone
that is camping. The event is in the National Park.
Camping is rustic in the National Park, make sure you are
aware of exactly what you are reserving if you camp there,
some sites have no water or toilets. The state park is north
of the bonfire, you will have to drive to the bonfire from
the state park, there is ample parking at the bonfire area.
The state park has better amenities. b>
There is also camping at nearby Frontier Town.
If ya don't camp, you can check out available hotels in West
Ocean City, Berlin, & Ocean City for places to stay.
Please keep in mind that the Ocean City Maryland area, including
the campsites at Assateague fill up quick due to the onset of the
tourism season. The Rangers recommend you have a reservation for
camping.
Ponies!
Assateague is famous for its wild ponies! These ponies are pretty
from a distance, but when you get too close, they might bite. They
eat, and go to the bathroom wayyyy to much, so please don't feed
'em. They aren't invited to the bonfire, all they ever bring along
is meadow muffins, and they drink too much scotch. If you are
really interested in the ponies, you can get info to sponsor one,
from the visitors center.
Caching
Assateague Island is a National Park, so you know what that means…
no caches. However, you can check out caches which are nearby,
which can be searched using zip codes 21842 & 21811.
Fees
Yes there is a fee. No one likes fees….grrrrr, but its not too
too bad. The park charges ten dollars per vehicle. That is
not per person, just per vehicle. So if a family of four is in
their car, it costs the whole carload just ten dollars, not forty.
This fee will provide a pass for your vehicle for one week.
There is more than one park that makes up Assateague Island. You
WILL NOT have to pay any other fee than the National Park fee in
order to attend this event. The other park charges 3 dollars
PER PERSON. If you encounter that fee, don't pay it, you're in the
wrong park. Once you cross the bridge onto Assateague Island, hang
a right, do not go straight, which would take you to the state
park.
Recap - what Cachers need to bring Quicklist:
