Geocache Description:

Takes about 10 - 15 mins to complete, not much walking required. Special equipment is required to retrieve the cache, but you should be able to improvise on site. Requires the crossing of a busy road. Ideally it wouldn't have, but circumstances dictated otherwise.

This cache was inspired by the Cold War Oxfordshire cache by thehoomer (GCYW28) which is a greatly superior cache to this one and is highly recommended. During the Cold War, Britain built many Nuclear bunkers all over the country. Some were very large and could hold hundreds of people for many months. They were designed for politicians and decision makers. Others were very small and were designed to hold 3 people for a short time. These smaller bunkers were built so that the people within them could record the power of any nearby nuclear explosion and then feed it on to the larger local bunkers. Whereas some bunkers survive (as in the previously mentioned cache), others were destroyed when the Cold War came to an end. I was curious where the nearest bunker was around these parts and found out it was in Crowthorne. Unfortunately it has been destroyed and filled in, fortunately the filling in wasn't done as well as it could have been and one end has caved in and part of the bunker is visible through a hole in the ground. I believe this cache was decommisioned in 1968 - i.e. 40 years ago. Please do not try and climb into the hole, the cache is not in there and it may well be dangerous to attempt this. The bunker is around 10-15 metres from the footpath. When you find the bunker, you will need to answer the following questions: 1 - What household item can you see down the hole in the bunker (you may need to look in sideways to see it). If you can see a: table, then A = 3 and B = 4 chair, then A = 6 and B = 7 bed, then A = 1 and B = 2. 2 - How would you describe the hole itself? C = 1 if you think it's just a hole C = 3 if you think it has a tree growing out of it. 3 - How would you describe the ground on the other side of the footpath to the bunker? D = 0 and E = 6 - It's Swinley Forest, it's full of Pine Trees of course D = 4 and E = 5 - It's full of Trees, but they aren't Pines D = 5 and E = 4 - Don't reckon there's ever been trees here D = 7 and E = 8 - Blimey, it looks like Joe Stalin is back and has sent over a low flying MIG with a chainsaw stuck to its undercarraige in a vain attempt to find our bunker (this is the correct answer - in the time since the cache was set trees have re-grown) The cache can now be found at: N 51.22.BDE W 000.47.CDA Please park at N 51.22.327, W 000.47.156 At creation, cache contained log book, Geocoin and a small pencil. The cache is a well hidden light grey 35mm cannister. It can be reached without leaving the pavement.
