Besides caching the
Patrol members love launching rockets. Unfortunately our insatiable
desire for greater heights is our undoing. We start out with no
wind and a small “A” motor. All systems go and its an
easy recovery. Only 100’, lets try a “B” motor
the Patrol cry. I comply and again all goes well. Their blood lust
is insatiable and we quickly proceed through the alphabet of motors
until we end up cramming in the largest motor the rocket can
handle. The count down proceedes, the rocket ascends on a column of
fire and fades to a dot in the sky. All breath is held and soon a
faint “POP” is heard. The parachute deploys, a
beautiful thing, floating like a dandelion seed. At this altitude a
gentle breeze catches it and we stand watching helplessly as
further and further it floats, out over the park road, across the
soccer field to touch down squarely in the forest. With the numbers
of rockets lost, the trees should be festooned like Christmas with
their littered remains. If you find any on your quest please drop
me a line
