RovingSteve's Logic Puzzle Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Geocaching HQ Admin: The City of Portland has a new geocaching policy for geocaches placed on Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) property. The policy is intended to support the growing recreational activity of geocaching while also ensuring it does not negatively impact parks, properties, assets, staff or the public.

PP&R welcomes geocaches in many of its parks and properties. However, the property where this geocache is located is one that does not allow geocaches according to the new policy. (Note: Forest Park is divided into three management units - the northernmost unit between Germantown Road and Newberry does not allow geocaches.)

There are many reasons a park may not allow geocaches, based on the determination of the staff who manage each particular site. These reasons can include that the property’s primary focus is on habitat values, the potential conflicts with other park users, among other factors. Because this geocache is in a park that does not allow them, it been archived. As the geocache owner, you are expected to retrieve the geocache container and any associated physical stages within 2 weeks. After August 27th, your geocache may be removed by parks’ staff or other designated persons.

For questions about this policy, please contact Bryan Aptekar, Portland Parks & Recreation, bryan.aptekar@portlandoregon.gov.

Geocache Description:

I like to solve logic puzzles, so I thought I would make a puzzle cache out of one. As you might expect, the above coordinates are not the location of the cache. However, the coordinates do lie within the park that contains the cache.

Spread throughout this undeveloped park are five landmarks of interest, one of which is the cache. These landmarks are spread over five different latitudes: N 45.44267, N 45.44497, N 45.44411, N 45.44462, and N 45.44431, and five different longitudes: W 122.71545, W 122.71628, W 122.71396, W122.71939, and W122.71648. (All notation is in DD.ddddd format, WSG84 datum.) The following clues will help you find the cache:

1) The Cache is west of at least two landmarks, including the one at N 45.44431.
2) The Water Tank is north of the Tree Fort and the Cache, but south of the Bone that Bruno buried.
3) The Tree Fort is west of the Bone.
4) One of the landmarks is at N 45.44462 - W 122.71939.
5) Neither the Bone nor the Tree Fort is at W 122.71648.
6) The Rope Swing is south of the Cache.

Solving Notes: All of the info you need to solve this puzzle is on this page, no need to go out to the park and check multiple possibilities. No need to download a map to see where the water tank really is. No need to convert to a different datum. If you have problems with the puzzle, feel free to drop me a line.

Finding Notes: No bushwacking, cache is within 10 meters of a trail. GPS reception is HIGHLY variable, my August readings were 60m off my December readings. Get to the general area and use your geosenses, hopefully it will jump out at you! If you want a better finding clue, email me your solution coordinates.
