Bush Camping

An Event Cache by SA_ParrotHead
2nd - 5th of October 2009

             

In the Tradition of Skippy's -
"Flinders under the stars"
the Parrots invite you to a weekend in the
Vulkathunha - Gammon ranges .


Parrots are heading off to the Gammon ranges for the October Long Weekend and we would like you to join us for a fun bush experience.

This will be a weekend of traveling around the scenic Gammon Ranges and visiting Arkaroola, the Paralana Hot springs and Lake Frome. We will be staying the nights in bush camps.

The main event will be a cookout under the stars on the Saturday night. So if you are in the area why not come and join us for dinner and claim a smiley.

Itinerary

Friday 2nd October
leave Mc Donalds carpark at Munno Para by 7:30 am.
Travel to Chambers Gorge via Yunta.
Set up camp in Chambers Gorge and Climb Mt Chambers. Spend the night at Chambers Gorge.
Climbing Mt Chambers will require a level of fitness and ability suitable for climbing. Those not wanting to do the climb but wanting to come along for the weekend fun can go walking in the gorge or just setup your chair and thermos at the bottom and watch the climbers and enjoy the great outdoors.

Saturday 3rd October
Leave Mt Chambers and go to Arkaroola Village to refuel.
Then to Lake Frome passing through the Dog Fence along the way.
From the lake travel to Weetootla Gorge and set up camp.
In the afternoon do the Wortupa loop track then return and get ready for the main event.
Communal bush cooking at the campsite where you can come along and show off your bush cooking skills. Bring your camp ovens and fire wood with you ready to cook up a feast.

Sunday 4th October
Visit Arkaroola and drive out to Paralana hot springs. We will the spend the rest of the day Driving and sight-seeing in the area.
Return to our camp at Weetootla Gorge

Monday 5th October
Return to Adelaide via Blinman and Parachilna.

Information on Weetootla Gorge

             

Weetootla Gorge, Wiriti Urdla
Weetootla Gorge camping area is located to the west of Balcanoona at the end of Weetootla Gorge. Camp sites are located along Balcanoona Creek among Mallee, Native Pines and Bullock Bush. The camping area is approximately 20 minutes from Balcanoona, 2 km towards Arkaroola then 5 km along the signposted track.
The campground is located approximately 4 km from the self-registration station. Designated camp sites are set out adjacent to the toilets and also 1 km further on, near the Weetootla Gorge trailhead.

Information on Chambers Gorge

Chambers Gorge is one of the most spectacular and beautiful gorges in the Flinders Ranges and South Australia. Both the Gorge and Mount Chambers, at 409 metres, were discovered by Captain Edward C. Frome and his party in 1843. They were first named by John McDouall Stuart in 1855 when surveying pastoral leases for the Chambers Brothers.

The Burtons recipe for
BEEF & PUMPKIN CURRY.


750g beef,
750g pumpkin,
2Tblsp peanut oil(use other oil if allergic to nuts).
2-3Tblsp red curry paste
2 cups coconut milk
3 Kaffir lime leaves
2 Tblsp fish sauce
2-3 large dried chillies
1 Tsp palm sugar
1/2 cup coconut cream

Cut beef into cubes, peel the pumpkin and cut into cubes the same size. Heat the oil and fry curry paste until oil around edges. Add beef cubes and fry in the mixture until changed in colour. Add the coconut milk, Kaffir lime leaves, chillies and fish sauce. Simmer 30 mins then add pumkin. If needed add extra cup milk. Cook for further 35-40 mins. Stir in palm sugar the coconut cream. Serve and enjoy.
