In September 1987 Jaco Pastorius was beaten to death by a nightclub
bouncer who did not recognize him: the most virtuosic and
influential electric jazz bassist of his time.
Jaco's final years were a bewildering combination of musical
innovation and mental illness -- playing with Weather Report, Joni
Mitchell, and Pat Metheny among other giants, but also spending
long stretches of time homeless and out of touch with reality.
His driving sixteenth notes, gliding fretless chords, and
ringing harmonics are lasting musical memorials, twenty years after
his death and beyond, to an artist who truly lived on the cusp of
genius and madness.
