Geocache Description:

The Vikos Gorge lies in the North Pindus Mountains in the historic area of Epirus, 30 odd kilometers north of Ioannina. The area, called the Zagori, has 44 villages called the Zagorohoria.

Vikos Gorge is 10 Km long and has vertical and rocky slopes that are many hundreds of meter high. The gorge streches out from the village of Monodendri to the village of Vikos. We strongly suggest that you visit as many villages of Zagori as you can, do some hicking in the gorge, taste local traditional food and sweets. One of the most popoular villages of Zagori is Monodendri, on the rim of the gorge near the south end. Monodendri is a good spot for those who want to hike the entire gorge as well as view the famous stone arched bridges over the river below the gorge. It's a restored stone village of walled stone courtyards with fortress-like gates. The abandoned Monastery of Agia Paraskevi is nearly a kilometer down the new kalderimi from the lower platia in Monodendri and makes a nice limber-up after a long bus or car journey. The view up and down the gorge are the perfect introduction to the hike ahead. Continuing around the corner of the cliff is the "Megali Spilia", a caved reached by a narrow path with a scary drop-off for those who enjoy heights. In order to get to the cache From Monodendri, walk to the abandoned Monastery of Agia Paraskevi (600m). Pass through the monastery, follow the stairs and go on according to the sign : "Grand Cave-Spitakia-Old bridges". The path starts there. !!!!Please walk carefully on the path!!! If you are afraid of hights maybe this is not a good idea!!!! .................... Note: Sometimes durring winter the path is covered with snow and the cache may be not accesible!
