This is a dormant volcano in northeast New Mexico. I have enjoyed hunting several caches and virtual caches in New Mexico over my travels there so I decided to add one in appreciation. My children and I visited this site on our way up to Yellowstone National Park for our Vacation/Geocaching trip this summer (June - 2002). I had passed this site back in 1998 on a previous trip but didn't stop. I'm certainly glad we did this time.
This is the National Park Service site about Capulin http://www.nps.gov/cavo/index.htm so you can get more information and history of the monument itself so I won't go into great detail, I'll just tell you how to log the find.
These coordinates will place you on the rim of the volcano, about halfway up the slightly steep slope in the trail. The trail continues all the way around the rim and it's about a mile long. It is steep enough to be a bit of a challenge for some, thus the 2.5 terrain. The 2.5 difficulty is for the fact that you have to drive up a fairly narrow road with no shoulders to the parking lot at the top. Once you reach the coordinates simply e-mail me and tell me what the closest sign says. Please don't put your answer in your log, even encrypted.
As an alternate means, if the trail is too steep for you, there are three photographs mounted for viewing on the outside edge of the crater rim parking lot. Tell me what the subject is of the middle photo and you can also claim the find. Either method is acceptable, but trust me, the walk around the rim is worth it if you can make it.
"Team TJ" has graciously allowed me to join in contributing to their "Virtual New Mexico" series of virtual caches, my thanks to them.
